You’ve Got Mail
Ben was a great believer
in the gentle, scholarly art
of letter writing.
I still have his letters.
I save all my correspondence.
—from a novel by Daniel Hecht
My family moved to London at the beginning of my senior year in high school in 1967. Suddenly I lived an ocean away from my friends in New Jersey. The postal system became my lifeline.
In the years since, I have never lost my passion for connecting with others through the mail. I love telling a story and sending it on a journey through the post, or receiving a letter with my name written in the hand of a friend. I love the thrill of breaking and entering an envelope.
A year after moving to London, when I headed to college in Connecticut 3000 miles away—this time away from my family—my mom thought to pen me a letter enough in advance of my arrival on campus that I’d have mail waiting for me in P.O. Box 435. Brilliant!
In that spirit, I have created and sent postcards to my granddaughters so they’ll have correspondence waiting for them on the first mail delivery day at Camp Takodah tomorrow.
