Bookmarking Joy in December, 4

It is my great grand good fortune to participate in a yoga class that nourishes me week after week, a class I bumped into in the unlikeliest of ways.

That story: had a mammogram a few years back. Results not definitive. Had to have a repeat done at a different facility. Met afterwards with ‘my’ radiologist, the mother of children whom I’d tutored years ago who nows does a second read of any radiography I need done. The gifts of the mammogram callback were several: (1) radiology showed no lesions; (2) my radiologist friend and I grabbed the chance to catch up on personal news; and (3) she asked me if I knew of a good local yoga class, which I did not, but I offered to poke around.

What I found: a class that meets at my local senior center (wait, I’m a senior?!), is reasonably priced, is just minutes from my home, and has an instructor who is Kripalu trained, great at leading classes responsive to the expressed needs in any given session, and gifted at creating community. Total win!

To express appreciation at year’s end, we class members gave her a gift certificate to use at a local bookstore, and I volunteered—no surprise here—to handpaint a bookmark to accompany the gift certificate.

Hands to heart center,
in bodies our spirits move
as one. Namaste.

    1. Lola, yes to the colors! I’ve really gotten into playing and engaging with this color palette and keeping it limited. Very satisfying exploration. And, yes again, three cheers to the happenstance of good things!

  2. We find good things sometimes in a round about way! Flowing abstract!

    1. I love such roundabout discoveries as my yoga class! And your noting the flowing quality of this piece speaks to the flow of my roundabout discovery. It’s fun for me to see the soft swirl of this bookmark on the heels of the very straightedged hammered-into-place fixedness of the previous bookmark.

  3. What a great story….and what a beautiful bookmark and gift. The colors, textures and words most certainly evoke the yoga experience. Well done Dotty!

  4. Dotty ~ I love the energy and movement of all the layers in this beautiful bookmark. And you know I love opening up the piece and finding the messages, too. What’s really cool, though, is the serendipitous rippling of all the events that led to you making this art. That’s just beautiful.

    1. Roseanne, I love the energy and movement in this bookmark also, energy and movement that developed organically as I felt my way through its creation. I think if I consciously set out to create the movement and the feeling of wisps of smoke or mist shape-shifting in air flow that evolved, I’d miss the mark. I’m grateful for all the ‘mistakes’ I made en route that led to my responding in whatever ways I did that led to this result! All of which is to say the art DOES seem to manifest the rippling of events that led to my making it.

Yay for your finding the embedded messages : )

Thank you for your thought-ful feedback.
