Celebrate!

The first time I celebrated my friend Martha’s birthday was in February 1968. We’d both been displaced from our homes in the States the prior summer—she from Altadena, CA, and I from Summit, NJ—and found ourselves doing our senior year of high school at the American School in London. We connected quickly through our shared willingness to listen ad nauseam to each other’s pining for the friends we missed back home, through our simpatico spirit of adventure about living in London, and courtesy of a highly compatible degree of snark in our personalities.

We’re great friends to this day!

Happy birthday, Martha!

  1. How perfectly you’ve paired the bookmark to the book cover, Dotty.
Interesting tidbit: my aunt and uncle were flying home from Italy after attending their son’s and new daughter-in-law’s wedding and their plane had to make an emergency landing in Newfoundland. The airspace over the US was closed down due to the events unfolding on 9-11. They were so touched by the hospitality and graciousness of the residents of Gander.

    1. Roseanne, thanks for your thumbs up to my pairing of bookmark to book. You might join me in amusement if you’d been witness to how many layers it took to accomplish that match—such a tiny bit of painting real estate and SO many layers and tweaks and revisions and paint-overs!

I recently read an oral history of 9/11, a compelling book in its own right, in which the story of Gander was brought to my attention. This book about 9/11 and the week following as experienced in Gander, Newfoundland, fascinated me. What fun to find out that through you and a few degrees of separation, I have a tidbit of connection to those days in Gander!

  2. Always love your bookmarks! About Gander: I recently saw a theatre play in the high school of my children (my son performed in it), and now I read the above, I think that play was based on this book.

    1. Was the play a musical called “Come From Away”? That play was based on the book depicted above about the events in Gander, Newfoundland, following the September 11th attacks! What a wonderful coincidence that Leander performed in the play recently!
