The Refrains of Fine Feathered Friends

What a magnificent time of year for our getaway to the coast of Maine! We spent considerable time outdoors and, with our Merlin Bird ID app, we were able to identify by sound those birds whose songs accompanied us everywhere we went. Though we didn’t see over fifty percent of the critters whose music delighted us, Merlin says we heard the following:

american crow
american goldfinch
american redstart
american robin
black and white warbler
black-throated green warbler
bluejay
bobolink
canada goose
canada warbler
catbird
chestnut-sided warbler
chipping sparrow
common crow
common grackle
common raven
common yellow-throat
eastern bluebird
eastern phoebe
eastern towhee
flycatcher
gray catbird
hermit thrush
laughing gull
mourning dove
nashville warbler
northern cardinal
northern flicker
northern parula
ovenbird
prairie warbler
red-eyed vireo
red-winged blackbird
red crossbill
rose-crested grosbeak
song sparrow
veery
yellow warbler

  1. That’s quite a list….some of which I’ve never heard of! We enjoy using Merlin too! Watching and listening to the birds is such a source of entertainment.

And what a delightfully yummy seascape sketch! And the splash of yellow and the punctuation of the washi tape make it really sing!

    1. We had a parakeet for many years when my kids were growing up, and I developed a huge appreciation for birds courtesy of Kapiti’s being a family member. I am especially enjoying birds this summer, in part b/c we now have a sense through Merlin of the huge variety surrounding us.

This seascape + washi + splash of yellow exploration was relaxing fun. I got into a meditative state of playfulness.

And, speaking of playfulness, a tip of the hat to you for bringing the word ‘sing’ into your comment about the art after my discussion of birdsong : )

      1. We had a lot of pets with our kids…but not a parakeet. And….I knew exactly what I was referencing when I used the word “sing!” 😉

    1. Those feathered friends were a very real presence, mostly heard rather than seen as they were. I so savored their presence and industry and entertainment and companionship. YOU know—with your crow friends : )

And, yes to art journal playtime and magic!
