Guest Artist / April 1, 2024

Guest Artist

When my kids were youngsters I read an article in Mothering magazine that sparked me to make a particular style of hand puppet called a “puffet,” using an outgrown snap-front sweatshirt that had been worn by Jay as an infant.

meet Pookie!

Pookie was magical! The kids would engage in conversations with him of a sort that they had with no one else, sometimes going so far as to bring Pookie to me and commanding, “Mama, put Pookie on your hand so I can talk to him.” I was mesmerized, witnessing many times over how a sweatshirt, some yarn, some felt, two buttons, and a pom pom could transform before my eyes from an inanimate assemblage of materials into a living being interacting with my young kids.

Pookie was very excited to be invited on our trip to Virginia last week during which time he sat to have his portrait drawn by today’s featured guest artist, my granddaughter Emmy, 14!

Thanks for your enthusiasm here. Pookie was definitely a player in the early years of our family life.

  4. Your sweet Emmy really is quite the budding artist. How lucky you both are to have each other to share such pleasures – art and play.

    1. My sweet Emmy really IS quite the budding artist! And way more than I, on the evening when she drew Pookie—I was a paralyzed artist!

I’d just discovered that in my carefully packed bin of art supplies my art journal was nowhere to be found. I’d packed it but then taken it out to use it and unwittingly left it at home in my studio instead of repacking it for Virginia.

I grabbed a sheet of paper from Emmy’s sketchbook but was too sidetracked internally to tap into creative energy so instead I posed Pookie, offered various supplies to Emmy, sharpened pencils as needed, and thoroughly enjoyed watching her dive right into her own creative energy with no hesitation whatsoever. Go, Emmy!
