Company’s Comin’! / June 30, 2024

Company’s Comin’!

We’ve got family coming in for the week starting today! We’ll have a home full to overflowing with our kids, their spouses, and our grandkids. JOY!

One of the (many many) gifts of their coming is that in preparing for having them here, our attention has shifted to noticing all manner of dust, dirt, unfinished projects, and piles of stuff that totally escape notice otherwise. This week, in addition to Dave’s painting some interior window frames on windows installed years ago (10 years? 15?), I got a bee in my bonnet about a 6 x6″ painting sitting on the small credenza in the front entry space in our home, wanting to paint over what was on the panel and create something new.

Similarly, a year ago in late June I got caught up in painting a canvas to hang on the wall in the same front entry in advance of the arrival of the same family members. In both cases, not enough time to bring the respective paintings to resolution before arrival of guests. In both cases, my modus operandi: the work in progress goes on display anyway!

  2. I remember that of last year! I love that you don’t go for ‘finished’, but for what feels alive, real, inspiring and what you want to share with your loved ones.

    1. Thanks for sharing my delight in not going for finished but for what you so beautifully stated as going for what feels alive, real, inspiring, and what I want to share with my loved ones, Simone! Yes to all of it!!

there is nothing (nothing!) quite like company coming to inspire a flurry of housekeeping and rearranging! I hust love the impact of your piece in that space – perfectly perfect, welcoming and a bit cheeky even! Makes me grin and feel like stepping in to that space boldly!

    1. Superfun feedback, Lola! A bit cheeky! tee hee! We’re all stepping boldly here, and I walk back that little painting with a bit of swagger and simple delight many times per day : )

You know what I love about this piece? When I enlarge it out, I see so many bumps and textures and surfaces. The different shades of red with the black and white give it such beautiful contrast. And then all the writing and asemia (did I just make that plural form up?) and bits glued on! Here’s a dream: we all live in the same neighborhood and can sit at each other’s tables while we work and create. How awesome would that be? Perhaps in our next incarnation we can work that out. 💚

You know what I love about your comments? So much welcome feedback about the visual language in this piece—thank you! I hope to play with it a bit more once the wonderfully wild ride of this week comes to its close, and your noticings will inform decisions—it’ll be fun to have you ‘sitting at my table’ virtually ‘while I work and create.’ Also while I work and create, I’ll be holding the dream you articulate, envisioning ways we can tweak it to make it come to pass in our CURRENT incarnation.

    1. Sheila, thank you! I enjoy the feeling of lightness and freedom that suffuses me as I paint once I shift into this-is-going-on-display-in-progress. Once on display, as this piece has been for well over a week now, I walk past it repeatedly, see it in new ways, and receive ideas from the muses. I’ll have fun returning to this one for finishing touches.
