Magic

When I woke up last Saturday, the CutUp featured here didn’t exist. I had a studio with art supplies and a loose intention to weave into my day, if possible, the creation a new CutUp.

By Saturday’s end, a new CutUp!

The seeming magic of going from ‘nothing’ to ‘something’ never gets old. I feel as though I am spinning gold from straw!

My friend Simone, of the Netherlands, whom I met online through a 30-Paintings-in-30-Days challenge about nine years ago, wrote this to me a few days ago about her recent practice of setting aside a short time nearly every day to create small collages: It’s wonderful. I feel a sense of contentment and coming home to myself. Every time I’m marveling in the tiny things that are happening beneath my hands. Small universes coming into being, layers, depth. Small windows cut out of time, completely here and now. Everything flowing freely. No thinking involved. Just taking something and glueing, without regret. Just following what happens.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

I was struck, yet again, as I created this CutUp, by the way I feel transported while I am actively creating and also after the fact when the physical manifestation of my creating is visible to my eye. I was struck, yet again, by the way I shift away from mental preoccupation with past and future into here and now.

Not necessarily every time, and not necessarily without interruption, but time and time again.

Both process and product have the magnificent power to move me into mystery.

  1. I had to read this a couple times. Your words…and Simone’s were just what I needed to hear. It’s wonderful when we can be transported while making our art. Pretty magical!

And what’s not to love about the whole rainbow in a CutUp…and the magic of words showing through. Bravo!

    1. MaryAnn, I’m so glad Simone’s and my words were just what you needed to hear. They were just what I needed to hear, too!

I thought of you often as I selected, scissored, and affixed a whole rainbow in this CutUp : )
