Notes about poem and art:
• With “eavesdropping” I share a predawn neighborhood observation, adhering to the classical Japanese tanka form of 5 lines of 5 – 7 – 5 – 7 – 7 syllables with a mid-poem pivotal turn plus my own stricture to end no lines with prepositions, pronouns, or articles—a considerable and enjoyable challenge! I was pleased to honor a 1,300-year-old structure while using a contemporary voice, infusing personification, anthropomorphism, and metaphor into what traditionally would have been more understated, naturalistic observations.
• I recently participated in Karen Abend’s online Sketchbook Revival Challenge. During a zoom kick-off, she offered a series of quick prompts, with opportunities to scribble, doodle, paint, write, and play in our sketchbooks. The quick-moving aspect helped me dive in intuitively without overthinking. The Hatches is what filled one of the tiny squares on my page, using ink and watercolor paint to create a whole neighborhood of colorful crowded houses.

  1. I love when your poems give us a little window into your early morning walks. I never thought about us eavesdropping on the birds…but that’s certainly what we’re doing!

At first glance you painting is just a colorful geometric design….but THEN I saw all the houses. And once you see them….I can’t unsee them and imagine a close knit community where everyone is welcome!

    1. MaryAnn, thank you for these reflections!

I’m grateful for your affirmation of the little windows into my early morning walks and for your affirmation of my moving beyond an original observation of crescent-moon-to-my-left-birdsong-to-my-right to the poetry held within.

And it totally tickles me that first you saw no more than colorful geometric shapes and then you saw all the houses, the close-knit community, the welcoming neighborhood! Yes!!!

  2. Kudos to adding challenge to challenge in you little tanka poem! “pillow-talk of red robins” such a beautiful phrase!

Love the many combinations of roofs and houses! A real quilt of a community!

    1. Carol, thanks for your feedback. I took an enjoyable deep dive with this spare little poem. Glad you heard the beauty in the phrase pillow-talk of red robins. I was out on my usual predawn walk, reveling in the seasonal shift to predawn walks that include the song of songbirds; I found myself wondering, who were these birds making noise before sunrise?!

Your lovely phrase: quilt of community : )

  3. “horizon-shrugging moon” – now THAT is a moon with confidence and attitude! As always, your poetry sits just right – makes me nod and say OH and AH and AHA! Combined with your tiny, jam-packed art AND the digital quilt play! Woot! What a way to begin the work week! Magnificent!

    1. oooo, love that you picked up on the horizon-shrugging moon, Lola! When I first spied the moon on the day that inspired this poem, I thought of it as horizon-hugging b/c it was so close to the horizon, and I loved the alliteration, BUT it was on its way UP, and confidently outpacing the sun, SO horizon-shrugging it became!

And thank you for the hug of your OHs and AHs and AHAs. Grateful!

Also delighted with your taking note of how tiny this little jam-packed piece of art is : )

  4. I love the images that eavesdropping brought to mind. Your challenge was a real synapse builder! ðŸ™‚ Bravo!

The Hatches are so fun! And I love your quilt idea! Cozy! I can’t help but see it as “big” though.

    1. The crescent of the moon was like the cupped hand of the universe amplifying the perhaps-meant-to-be-private conversation of the robins! I had a great time engaging with imagery, syllable count, pivots, and more in this poem. I’m grateful for your enjoyment—thanks!

LOL at the ever-present distorted impression of size that comes with posting images on a web page! The image of the 1.75 x 1.75″ photo above, of The Hatches, appears not only considerably larger than its real self in my journal, but also slightly larger than its “quilt” image above which is itself multiplied 4 times hahaha!!!

Serendipity! 2.0

To review, I find in my new Joy Journal from MaryAnn an envelope of JUST the right size and color in which my No Need art can make itself at home, and I tuck the envelope in JUST the right pocket in my journal. VERY satisfying.

But, there’s more to the story!

When I first open the envelope, I discover a small blank card printed by dept.store for the mind with a scribble design and the words OVER THE MOON on the front. Not only that but also MaryAnn has tucked inside the card a tiny cyanotype print evocative of a full moon in the night sky. Oh my gosh! Did I not originally post No Need with a tanka about the moon? Well, yes I did! Serendipity!

I take SUCH delight in affixing the moon cyanotype on the left interior side of the blank card, affixing a printed copy of my moon tanka on the facing side, and then tucking the card into the pocket with my enveloped art. As I merge my writing and art with MaryAnn’s maker magic, I take part in keeping this Joy Journal a living creation.

There are SO many reasons to call this journal a Joy Journal!

Serendipity! 1.0

MaryAnn Shupe and I connected online through our blogs several years ago and became friends as we commented back and forth and also began texting and emailing each other.

Recently, she started a project, a make-and-give-away project involving Joy Journals; might I want one?

Yes, please, MaryAnn, I’d love a Joy Journal. Please use papers from your vast collection, please include cyanotype prints in the mix, please give me pockets I could fill with my own poems and art.

MaryAnn does just that, and I am dazzled!

In a separate venture, in my own corner of the world, I create an eighth piece of art in my Make Yourself at Home series, a collaged piece called No Need to Knock —Come In, Come In!

No Need is tiny, quirky, irregularly shaped. Where on earth might it make itself at home?

It occurs to me after a bit that I could open my new Joy Journal to scout out a suitable pocket and—oh my gosh—I find a pocket holding a tiny envelope that is JUST the right size for No Need and is JUST the same yellow as that which appears in No Need!

Serendipity!

  1. What a beautiful gift! So much packed in a small space! That is joy! You will have a great time with that book!

A house within a house! Small with lots of power! So glad she found the perfect home!

    1. Yes! That journal is joy! Tucking No Need into an envelope and then tucking the envelope into a pocket is my first step in becoming a co-creator of the journal since its arrival a few weeks ago. More to come!

It was such fun to find a home for these houses, elevating No Need from scraps art to art which has the most imaginative and unusual “frame,” i.e. a designated space in a multilayered complex 3-D joy journal : )

  2. What a wonderful surprise to see your little Joy Journal in your post this morning! I absolutely loved making it. I had no idea that quirky little No Need to Knock house collage was that tiny…and the fact that it fit in that perfectly coordinated tiny envelope fills my heart with joy. Serendipity….indeed!

Thank you for the shoutout…and thank you for embracing this journal. Getting to have a glimpse at something new that is inside fills me with joy. The journal is saying “Come In, Come In!”

Your poem is just a delight! Now two makers are collaborating and making themselves right at home! Thank you for being an art partner and cheerleader!

    1. Isn’t the serendipity of No Need‘s finding a home in the deep yellow envelope you selected to include in the Joy Journal you made for me just so sweet??! As with you, that fills my heart with joy!

Now that I’ve taken the first step in contributing to the JJ I’m excited to take additional steps. My house collage and the JJ are grinning and saying in chorus, “No need to knock! Come in, come in!”

I had so much fun writing the poem to go with this post. I LOVE Clyde Watson’s nursery rhymes, and “Catch me & Kiss me & Say it again” gave me the perfect ditty to use as a springboard.

Back atcha: thank you for bing an art partner and cheerleader!

    1. Judy! What a delightful surprise to see you here this morning! I agree, wonderful to meet another member of MaryAnn’s joyful community! Thanks for enjoying my Joy Journal poem (great fun to create) and appreciating how perfectly my tiny collaged houses piece fit into and coordinated with the tiny envelope provided by MaryAnn.

I took a quick look-see at your Art and Stitch blog and your recently completed embroidered Seasons book—so much beautiful and, I’m guessing, happy stitching there. I see the stitchwork and can feel the needle going up and down through the fabric : ) Did the booklet come pre-made with its grids on the pages, or is that all your handwork also?

  6. This is just such a beautiful Joy Journal, Dotty. How wonderful it’ll be to enjoy all the little spots where all manner of ephemera can hide out. Hide and seek takes on new meaning with the journal. And the fact that your collaged piece fits in is so perfect. I zoomed in pretty closely and j’adore the textures and papers you used. I didn’t know the tune that you mentioned so I just kinda rapped the lyrics in my head! ♥️

  7. I think it might have been through Mothering Magazine or the Hearthsong catalog that Catch me & Kiss me & Say it again came into the growing up years of my children. SUCH a delightful book of newer-than-Mother-Goose nursery rhymes. The rhymes are word candy, and so musical. The original poem, from which came the title, goes as follows:

Catch me & Kiss me & Say it again
Set sail in a cockleshell boat
    If no one fell out
    Then who stayed in?
Catch me & Kiss me & Say it again

Thanks for your comments, Roseanne. That Joy Journal MaryAnn put together is such a terrific match for me! I will indeed be wonderful to enjoy the many many nooks and crannies if offers up. What a playground!
