Process! #4 / January 16, 2025

Process! #4

Fourth step: cycle through steps 1-3 as many times as you choose, layering additional dripped lines, splatters, mark-making, and intentions for 2025. ✅✅✅✅

Step 4.1: Amanda doesn’t include an explicit step for working collage into the exercise, but she has bits of collage showing through in her painting, so how can I not follow suit? ✅

I have to say again, and I know, I know, I’ve already said it before: I love collage!
• I love collecting source material for possible use;
• I love selecting what collage to include in any given painting;
• I love matching paper color to paint color;
• I love using wrinkled tissue paper for texture;
• I love the act of tearing paper;
• I love the feel of gluing paper bits into place, usually with my fingers; and
• I love using print matter to hint at story without actually telling a story, or, conversely, to include print matter that serendipitously and explicitly adds pertinent verbal elements to the visual.

  1. Love that “I love collage” list. And I love all your details. They DO tell the story of your love for collage….and your love for layering…collecting and choosing. You pieces ooze your joy in the process. Carry on!

    1. Thanks, MaryAnn! Love when my joy and pleasure in creation shine through!

      I’m feeling rusty at my creative hinges after having been “away” (without leaving home) celebrating Thanksmas with my family for the past week—my past several posts were painted ahead of the festivities and scheduled for release while I was otherwise occupied. I take heart from knowing that you are resuming joyful puttering with creative projects again after events at the tail end of 2024 kept you away from your usual level of output. Thanks for paving the way!

  2. Hi,

    This was an interesting post in that I was compelled to go back and revisit all the steps you took while creating this piece. Even though I have Amanda’s video, it was helpful to make myself a cheat sheet based on YOUR posts. It was a great recap pour moi. I love to zoom in as much as my computer will let me and really see the textures and movement. Love that and this piece.

    1. Roseanne, fun to learn that you have Amanda’s video also; hadn’t thought of that. Loved reading your comment above. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone back to watch A’s video! Seems so straightforward and memorable when she goes through the steps, but I only end up in my studio a few minutes here and a few there, plus we had houseguests for a week as you know, so I find I need to review the video again and again. I’m glad that’s been the case. I learn or notice something every time. I hope you’ll do the exercise also. Would love to see where you might take it : )

  4. This found me at the perfect time. You have inspired me once again, Dotty. ðŸ™‚ I am planning on doing abstract collage next month for The Creative Gathering. I have been prepping papers, and now I am even more excited to play with paper. To tear and glue, all that. :o)
