Noticing

A short enumeration of factors that caught my notice and led to the creation this CutUp:

• an idea garnered from something I saw on my Instagram feed some weeks ago, plus

• a piece of watercolor paper from a large pad given to me by friends who purchased their retirement home from an artist who was getting rid of some materials, plus

• a page pulled from a 1927 Funk and Wagnalls Practical Standard Dictionary given to me by an artist friend while visiting Monhegan Island in August 2019, plus

• a large sheet of drawing paper on which I’d painted a chaos layer while on vacation in North Hero, VT, an island in Lake Champlain, in June 2018, plus

• a Posca paint pen I purchased 7 years ago after asking artist friend Lola whom I met on line what she used to make the curly hair in one of her paintings, plus

• a quiet drizzly gray February Friday when alternative activity options involved pieces of paper featuring words such as IRS, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Financial Planning Worksheet, Clinician and Group Experience Survey, Your New Health Care Plan, Alumni Spotlight Form …

What I love about a piece like this is noticing the way my eye perceives the repetition of roughly identical shapes and immediately begins to move around and around the painting looking for patterns, looking for differences. And can’t keep from doing the same thing all over again each time it takes a look!

I also love taking note of the moments of process discouragement and of the moments when synapses fired and joy sparked.

Noticing. Just that.

What I’m noticing is how nearly every time I visit your blog I’m encouraged to look, look again, and look yet again.
Oh, and I notice that for me it’s a calm piece as green is a quiet and healing color.

  2. What a wonderful list of ingredients that went into this piece. The repetitive patterns are delightful with a lot of things to notice! Looking closely….and noticing are some of my favorite things to do.

  3. It’s interesting to realize the history of everything. That we wouldn’t exist without our parents, our grandparents, many generations back, thousands, maybe even millions of people. And this cutup also made of all these seemingly random things, all coming together in this one piece of art.

    1. YES YES YES. I am repeatedly awestruck with wonder, and grateful for the awe and wonder.

And this cutup has just begun its own life.

      Thank you, Simone.

  4. I so enjoyed reading what a mash-up of input this cut-up is! Posca pens! I still love them. And the part about your eyes moving around the piece seeking patterns? Yes!!!! In art, and in life, seeking patterns. The amazing brain. Love this series to the moon and back!

I agree re seeking patterns both in art and in LIFE. Those noggins of ours are busy busy busy.

I’m still shaking my head in a bit of disbelief about this series—not quite sure what got me going but I’ve had such a grand adventure, with life-enhancing amounts of learning, challenges, and delights.
