Trying My Hand

I’m trying my hand at some approaches and techniques I don’t typically use. I’ve got my 30 x 30″ canvas prepped and ready to go with a background mix of phthalo green+ but I decided to play a bit in my sketchbook first on a much smaller scale. Very out of character when it comes to my painting life for me to take preliminary steps this way. My impatient usual = just go!

Taped off a square, got the background mix in place, chose brushes that I judged to be proportional to the rough sketch lines I wanted to lay down, stood an arm’s length away, held my brush at the end of the handle in a loose grip, dipped into a contrasting color for sketching purposes.

loose sketch marks in art journal

That’s it for today. Have a student coming momentarily.

  1. holy macaroons – we are in the same realm! I don’t generally practice or plan too much on a painting, either. But lately I’ve been doing just that.

I can’t wait to see what happens with yours! 30 x 30 is BIG!

    1. 30 x 30 IS big for me, as you know! Fun to know we’re in the same realm, with a little bit of practice and planning going on : )

  2. Lovely and so inspiring to see a start of a painting. So good to realize that it doesn’t have to look like something finished, it’s a start and that’s the most important!

    1. Simone, I was JUST thinking about you a few minutes ago as I did food prep in my kitchen, and now here you are at my blog—hello, dear friend! Thank you for your recognition and appreciation of the energy and nature of the start of a painting. It is lovely for me, too, to pause here in this start.

      1. And lovely, that it’s possible – thanks to the internet – that we can share this all in spite of an ocean between us!

  4. Love trying out new ideas on the smaller format but usually, mainly because of the medium, I jump right in. I see you have some initial intentions in your head. Intentions are a great tool, both core and formal, but can change as work progresses.

    1. Carol, thanks for your observations and your recognition that these starting intentions are essentially invitations. They are first marks and as such are the beginning of movement, of call and response, of opening the door wide to all manner of possibility as the work progresses.

    1. Precisely, a package deal: beginning and middle at once. I’m remembering the old Certs advertising: It’s a breath mint! It’s a candy mint! Two, two, two mints in one! —— It’s a beginning! It’s the middle! Two, two, two paintings in one! Hahaha!
