Surprise!
I wake on my birthday, heart full of celebration, open to whatever might unfold, wondering what little surprises the day might hold in addition to a few planned activities. I also wake missing my dad fiercely on this May 13th date of birth we shared for 71 years. This is my second year without him to co-celebrate.
But!
Surprise!
When nephew Stuart and niece-in-law Adriana arrive for our third annual early-morning walk-on-my-birthday date, in addition to the priceless gift of sharing some time together, a totally unexpected gift of a different sort arrives with them in the form of a framed hand-drawn portrait of my dad, Stuart’s first-ever rendering of a face.

Of someone who meant so much to me and from someone who means much to me—the surprise of that gift and everything about its creation let love shine its light and lighten feelings of loss : )
