Instead Of / November 22, 2023

Instead Of

For a chunk of time a number of years ago—and even now upon occasion—I used an instead-of phrase in the subject line of an email message to indicate what it was I was forgoing (by which I often meant avoiding) in order to write the message. For example, you might have received an email from me with any of the following subject indicators:

instead of moving laundry from the washer to the dryer
instead of vacuuming the family room
instead of paying bills
instead of layering up to walk in wind and below-freezing temperatures
instead of prepping dinner.

Today’s subject heading:

instead of driving from Massachusetts to NJ on the day before Thanksgiving with a work colleague I barely know and getting stuck in stop-and-go traffic for four hours (as was the case 50 years ago).

I am very thankful today to be enjoying a leisurely day of relaxed food prep (kitchen smells wonderful) and some art play in my studio!

  1. Oh how I love that subject line! I think I live with that subjectively in my head all the time. “Instead of” doing many things I should do….I mostly do what I want to do. Right now there’s an ongoing list of those tasks and chores that I keep saying I’m going to do….and Paul just shakes his head and laughs because he knows I’ll choose something else instead.

So glad you had a quiet day at home rather that being stuck in traffic.

    1. Just now discovered that the reply I wrote four days ago must not have made its way through cyberspace; so sorry! LOL at your living with my instead-of subject line subjectively in your head all the time as you go about mostly doing what you want to do. Also LOL at Paul’s being on to your waywardness : )

    1. Simone, I’m smiling in appreciation at your skillful playful use of what I used as the theme for my post as a way to offer up a warm welcome comment! Thank you! I’m grateful to be practicing my art more often lately and grateful to have you following along supporting me : )

  3. Haha! Love that… instead of. Instead of going to sleep (almost 1 am), I am sitting here entranced by your piece. The title, I love your titles. The bold bright light, the warm sun, the scribbles and secrets, the jungle jumble. Love, Love, Love! xoxo
