Getting in My Own Way 1

Creating art is such a crazy proposition for me. What I actually create are problems to solve, complications to untangle, disasters to rectify, stumbling blocks to navigate.

And it appears that I do so willingly, although with any one particular project it is not with that deliberate intention or mindset that I set out.

Two days ago I started a new painting with a sheet of 11 x 14″ canvas-textured paper, a taped grid, three colors plus white, and the desire to enjoy another quick intuitive experience of flow. I grabbed India ink, a dip pen, and a chunky black Stabilo Woody watercolor pencil, got a quick intuitive flow of lines onto the page, … and froze!

loved the linework and could not get myself to take a next step.

Okay, Houston, we have a problem

  1. And that’s one of the beautiful things of creativity, to listen inside what needs to happen, and sometimes that’s waiting until the time is right. With love!

    1. Thank you, Simone! Creativity is such a grand arena in which to tap spiritual gifts. I am grateful each time I pause to listen, to be still, to trust the unfolding.

    1. Thanks for your faith in my ability to figure it out—experience tells me that I WILL figure this out, but my faith gets tested regularly!

  3. I love how some lines seem to have shadows. Nice effect. Love the mix of weight, and I really love that rough dark path. FUN!

    1. You’ve enumerated all the particulars that made me fall in love with and reluctant to part with what was meant to be simply and merely a very short-lived activation-of-white-space.
