You’ve Got Mail—6

I see photos posted online from Takodah—and I’m there! Nine years old, in Hobby Nook, sitting at a table crowded with fellow campers, summer air blowing in from windows on all sides of the building. I smell melted wax for candle-dipping, copper enamel baking on tie clips and clip-on earrings; hear laughter, chatter, muffled clatter from the kitchen behind the dining hall; feel the jostle of activity all around me. I choose small ceramic tiles, make decisions about what patterns please my eye as I position them with concentrated deliberation into a trivet for Grandma Chase.

Fast forward to summer 2023. It’s Caroline and Emmy’s turn to be at Takodah, while I create my own facsimile Hobby Nook experience at home, poring over collected art I’ve made, selecting pieces to crop and glue onto card stock, inscribing camp song lyrics onto the cards, singing to myself, rummaging through my bin of highly appealing chunky Stabilo watercolor pencils to select just the right colors with which to embellish my hand-lettering, addressing the cards, affixing postage stamps, sending the cards on their way to Richmond NH.

    1. Totally. Posting my postcards here at my blog with accompanying narratives has heightened my connectivity with camp—another win! And an additional element to share with C&E after the fact when they’re feeling homesick for camp : )

Love your embedded poem: whoop whoop! toot toot! win win!
