Taking a Vacation / June 12, 2023

Taking a Vacation

I find it soooooooo gosh-darned difficult to ‘take a vacation’ from the negative internal dialogue that all too often revs up as I paint. My knee-jerk reaction is to try to tame it. Quash it. Outsmart it.

Maybe, though, in addition to exploring color, line, handwriting, scribbles, and veiling—as I’m in the process of doing with the piece below—I’ll explore the idea of taking a vacation from trying to control the internal dialogue. Instead of trying to conquer it, I’ll open myself to fully receive it.

Let ‘er rip! Tell me more! Anything else?

I’ll send you a postcard, let you know how it goes!

  1. Dotty – I really like this piece with it’s combination of several cool elements. (I have not heard of veiling – I may have to try it.) It all works beautifully. Happy vacation! I’d like to take the same trip.

  2. Roseanne, greetings!

Veiling is a form of layering and can be accomplished in many ways. In this piece, I looked at what I’d already painted and then covered a section with plain white tissue paper collage, so as to create ‘fog’ or a ‘veil’ for contrast with the rest of the piece. I further ‘veiled’ that section using a fine tip white Posca paint pen to scribble ‘lace’ over all of it.

Thank you for your feedback. You’ve helped me see this piece in a new light.

In ‘taking a vacation’ from trying to control my inner critic as I continued to putter with this work in progress, I let it have its say as it asked me what the purpose was, why I was bothering with it anyway. My response (laughing): Hell if I know!

    1. Synchronicity: holy Lola!!! YES, heck YES. It’s all hard won, but, really, I think the challenge and ferocity of the inner critic are both key to the overall pull of creative adventure.

  4. Enjoy your vacation! Explore all the other activities it offers! Paint when you choose! Leave that inner critic at home!

    1. Carol, the idea of vacation is one that captures my attention, and the aspect I’m exploring right now is not that of taking a vacation from the inner critic, not that of leaving the inner critic at home but, rather, of taking a vacation from the effort of trying to leave the inner critic at home. I’m exploring the idea of saying to the inner critic, ok, c’mon along, you’ll have to pack your own bag, but c’mon along.

  5. Oh my! Stand up to that bully! Haha. I am drawn from the top center section, down and around, and over and back and through to the bottom left cornet. I love it all! Those two sections, with the mix of warm, rusty orange with cool brights really grab my attention. You won this round, Dotty! Haha 🙂

    1. Sheila, as ever, thanks for your feedback on the visual language showing up in paint on paper. I value being guided to see my work from your perspective : )
