Pop-Up Pockets
One of my favorite parts of the end-of-year holiday season is the popping up of unexpected pockets of joy—little moments that are unplanned, are part of no tradition or ritual, have little likelihood of being replicated, and might well be considered ‘everyday-nothings,’ yet which are deeply satisfying to me. In the wake of such experiences in recent years, I now enter this season—a season that previously felt overwhelming—with curiosity and openness, wondering what its pop-up pockets will hold.
One such pocket:
• saw a piece of art on Instagram last week that resonated and spurred me to want to try something similar
• grabbed a piece of 12 x 12″ deli paper, painted a background
• was tempted to leave it as it was (nothing like the original piece)

• nonetheless, moved forward in start-and-stutter fashion, alternately feeling disappointed and optimistic (emerging piece still a far cry from the original inspiration)

• suddenly realized today that the clock was ever-ticking and I needed to get two money gifts into the mail pronto
• now, an hour later, after a bit more fiddling and fussing, two checks are wrapped and in the mail; joy to the world!
