On My Nightstand, On My Easel*, June 2023

On my nightstand:

On the spectrum of obsessively orderly
to sublimely unconcerned with the everyday physical world,
my father and sister were—actually, they were nowhere;
they were somewhere near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border,
still looking for the spectrum itself.
My mother and I, meanwhile, were busy
organizing it by color and size.
I have a vivid memory of watching my mom
try to adjust an ever-so-slightly askew picture frame—
in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

On my easel:

think I’ve landed on what I want to bring with me in order to be able to create a little makeshift studio so I can create a little bit of makeshift art on an upcoming vacation. In broadest terms, my intention is to make some starts at home to develop in situ at our rental cottage with whatever art supplies I limit myself to. My first start, on 11 x 14″ paper:

———

*I rarely have books on my nightstand these days, having—to my ongoing surprise—switched over to audiobooks and ebooks, all of which come to me via my iPhone which resides either in my pocket or outside my bedroom, so please understand that on my nightstand is a metaphor for what I’m reading. Similarly, I’m not using an easel much these days; rather, I stand at a high counter, working on paper. But you get the idea, right?!

  1. “In fact, I’m not even going on a vacation; I just watched a cottage reno on the Magnolia Network while I ate lunch today.”

  2. What a fabulous idea! Love the chaotic background with the neurographic lines. Where are you vacationing?

    1. Thanks, Carol; I’m grateful to have a smidgen of an idea to direct me. Hudson Valley—a small home in a rural setting with a through-some-tree-trunks lake view.

    1. Thanks, MaryAnn. I’m guessing you might identify with my struggles if you observed the nonsense I go through in an effort to limit supplies the I pack!

  4. Hi Dotty, I loved the tape pulling off post! Its such a sensual experience and there is always a cracker jack surprise awaiting underneath! I tried to leave a comment but i have to access the post from another email account (linked to my WordPress) to have it go through. But at least i figured that out. Onwards and upwards. I listen to so many books on audio too! I love the free library LIBBY app, do you use that too? I’m working with two writing clients on cozy mysteries, one set in old west, one set in Victorian England so I am on a cozy tear at the moment. So fun. Sending a hug, loved the artwork today.

I listen to books at the Libby app every single day. What a gift to be able to indulge my lifelong love of reading so easily!

OMG, what fun for you to be working with two writing clients who’re generating cozy mysteries.

  5. makeshift studio, images of “nightstand”, a high counter and paper. Making “starts” to finish later. Oh yes.

    1. Lola! Hello! As challenged as I’m feeling to get additional starts created, I’m at the same time having fun dreaming about what makeshift studio space I’ll cobble together once in place in a rented home away from home. oh yes!
