Cut Out for Cutting

She began cutting
and we stopped talking,
both of us listening,
I think,
to the sound of the scissors.
For those of us

enamored of the world of textiles,
this sound
is a little symphony.
—Elizabeth Berg, The Art of Mending

I keep a small bare-bones sewing kit upstairs for simple mending jobs. It’s a tin box with lid, given to me by my friend Pat probably 35 years ago. I just emptied it of its contents to retrieve from the bottom a particular pair of long-dormant, usually-out-of-sight-out-of-mind 4″ stainless steel Singer embroidery scissors that will allow me to cut paper shapes with greater precision and delicacy.

Henri, I’m hooked!

  1. One of my favorites! I like the boldness and simplicity of the design, the repeating colors and shapes, the earth tone palette.

    1. Sylvia, fun to know this one is a favorite! Thanks! I think, in the evolution of this series, it was the first one where I saw shapes in front of my face at my desk and translated them into a mini-Matisse. It fell into place quickly and easily. I used a wallpaper sample found in my paper stash for two of the cut-outs.

    1. Lola, I’m doing a little happy dance here as I read your response!

Think sewing machine for the title’s literal referent, think inner light and any creative venture we engage in for the title’s deeper personal meaning ❤️

  3. I can picture the sewing box….I think we all might having something just like it! And don’t you just love when the right vintage tool for the job is there in the bottom.

What a delicate…and precisely cut Matisse piece.

    1. YES to having the right vintage tool for the job waiting in the bottom of the box! The box is especially dear to me as my friend Pat is no longer living.

Thanks for following my journey of exploration, discovery, bumbling, delight, and learning : )

      1. Speaking of bumbling…I should proofread a little better….”having” should have been “have.” I see what’s right…even though it’s wrong. Here’s to discovery, bumbling, delight….and learning! And being OK with being wrong sometimes.

  4. Being OK with being ‘wrong’ is such a huge vital part of the gift of creative ventures, don’t you think? Much as I might (and do) grumble in the moment or get a sinking feeling in my body when things don’t go as I wish, that back and forth between stumbling and dusting myself off to stay in motion is a key part of what keeps me playing.

  5. How wonderful are those little things and tools that have a long history and show up in exact the right moment: Now.

Yes to how wonderful are those little things and tools that have a long history and show up in exactly the right moment. Locating these scissors sparked such a lovely feeling of connection with my mother.
