Winging, Wondering

What does it mean to have a painting style?

I don't know.

I don't know either! But I sort of see/feel it!Love this little peekaboo creation especially that little face! I think this has elements of your other other postcards. The black lines, the small printed collages, and color palette! But all these can change in the next creation.... who knows!

Oh gosh I believe you most definitely have a style! I have your little pieces hanging near each other in my studio - a tiny body of work, most obviously yours! This piece - those lines that take me into and out of the painting, making the world vast and never ending in a 4 x 6 format. Brilliant!

One of the fun aspects of art, that acts as continuous perspective for every single bit of life as humans, is how enormously subjective experience is—whether one is the observer of one's own experience or someone else's.

Love that the vast and never ending comes through to you!

I think you definitely have a style all your own, Dotty. The shapes you choose to make, the abstract art form, the bold black lines, the collage paper you use..that is your style. :)

Sorry I haven't been coming around lately..just noticed your blog post emails have been going to my spam folder. I hope I've fixed it.

Katie, hello! Great to hear from you, and I appreciate your feedback re 'my' style. It's so funny how I can see characteristic brushstrokes, shapes, and so forth in the work of others but such recognition escapes me when it comes to my own work. And maybe the issue isn't being able to 'see' style as much as to feel it—in the making, I always feel like I'm all over the place. In any case, thanks for your thoughts—food for thought for me : )

Thanks, Simone. Your posts of awhile back (before your holiday) inspired me to show up again at my blog : )

Oooh, "feel, not see"..I never thought about that before. I think you're hitting on something there, Dotty. I feel a playful, fun vibe when I look at your work, especially the houses you paint.

I think it's very difficult for us to see our own style. People told me for years they could see mine, but I was always saying, where, where?? I couldn't see it.

I think it has to do with our choice of subject matter, paint colors, painting techniques, and anything we repeatedly do..like painting bold black lines. Whatever we're most comfort doing when we sit down to work becomes our style over time. Patterns form without us realizing it.

It's good to chat with you again..I usually walk away from your blog pondering something. I like that you make me think. :)))

Katie, thank you for keeping this conversation going—you've given me more to think about, for which I am grateful. In the end I suspect that my wanting a style and not feeling as though I 'have' one, is probably mostly a self-distraction, a place to let myself get snagged so as not to meet something else face on!
