I put down watercolor. Let it dry. Scribbled with an acrylic paint pen. Let it dry. Scribbled with ink. Let it dry. Created light and shadow with Neocolor crayons. Added dots with my white paint marker. All with no more thought than skipping down a sidewalk on a summer morning.

You brought me back a "few" years!
Try not waiting for the watercolor to dry!
Too bad I don't have a youtube recording of my 7th grade glee club's spring performance during which one of our numbers was 'Skip to My Lou' and I stood mutely until that piece was over, seeing it as beneath my dignity, MUCH to my parents' embarrassment.
I did a bunch of wet on wet with my other pieces but, now that I reflect back,
I probably never kept it wet when adding ink. Uncountable experiments ahead of me, eh?
you had me at lichen....this piece is playful joy!
Don't you just love lichen?
And skipping like a child probably sounds like it'd be wildly wonderful right about now.
Carol, I never hear Skip to My Lou without thinking of Dotty’s 7th grade bold act of rebellion!
Ha ha Ha! Love that ... beneath our dignity at such an age!!! Girl power! Your "thoughtless" scribblings are what I was trying for. And I even thought, "What would Dotty do?", a few times. But I get stuck in my head too much. Still, the process was delightful :)
Your mention of skipping and the scribbles make me think of Family Circus and the path of Billy's busy day. Smiling and trying to follow your lines. LOL
Joje, I knew you'd enjoy this discussion! I'm guilty as charged and proud of it!
Skipping is still occasionally in my repertoire but feels very gravity-centric! Glad I can skip freely in my art : )
Love your reference to Family Circus—can totally picture it!
Scribbling 'thoughtlessly': sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. I, too, get way stuck in my head.
Love this.....those greens and yellows creating 'Lichen'!! As for the skipping part - those marks are so joyful - love how they 'skip' across the paper.....
Those marks DID skip across the page, with me right behind them. I loved seeing the lichen after the fact! Made for a funny contrast—given that lichen is soooooooo slow in the evolving in nature. Thanks for your feedback, Janet!
Not sure what 'skipping' is. With a rope (touwtjespringen?) Jumping from stone to stone (hinkelen?)
I get the idea, though! ;-)
Not touwtjespringen, but I used to skip rope by the hour when I lived in the Netherlands, and not hinkelen. See this 9 second video: : )
Glad you got the idea/feeling!
