Searching for Words by Writing Words

reunion

what is at the heart
of what i want to say?
i don’t know yet
so i’ll write
to discover.

sylvia and i
painted recently
in real time
in the same space
together.

together!

we painted over
previously painted canvases
with no intent other than to paint.
together.

the first time we painted together
was memorial day weekend 2014.
the second and only other time
was two weeks ago.

at heart:
some marks on canvas
the delicious feel of brush and paint
the gift of conversation and laughter.

gladness and joy
gladness and joy

gladness and joy.

what I put on canvas while Sylvia and I painted together
acrylic, charcoal, carbon stick, and collage
on top of an existing painting
on canvas

  1. Your search was successful. I do believe you found the right words to describe this very special painting together event…and it produced a scrumptious painting! Well done! What a fabulous story of friendship kindled over time and space and art.

    1. Carol, fun to hear your reflections on this post—thank you! In both my poetry-playing and my paint-playing I made marks, responded to them with more marks, and so on. Lots of not-knowing, moments of elucidation : )

  5. Such a happy day, this reunion after 11 years. I can feel your joy, Dotty. This is just beautiful and evocative. As usual, I opened it up way, way big and just dove in. Such a yummy palette you’ve chosen for the blossoms, with the mauves and pinks and natural shades. And then the pops of yellow. It’s really perfect juxtaposed with the forest-y colors. What size is this, btw?

    1. Roseanne, thanks for your deep dive and your helping me take a fresh look at what was an unusual painting session w/ many constraints. After reading your comments I followed suit in opening the image up way, way big. As often happens when I do that, I discovered found compositions that pleased me and might direct future explorations on canvas. I’ll have to ask Sylvia what size the canvas was—somewhere in the range of 17×20″, I think. It’s with Sylvia.
