Invitation / May 21, 2025

Invitation

an exceedingly scheduled day

opens with bluster, wind, and chill,
a quarter moon,
a brisk walk in first light;

surprises me
with a pocket of unschedule
even as i write and review
minutely calibrated timelines,
perform concrete tasks
in focused forward fashion;

invites me—
unplanned unlisted unexpected—
into my studio,
where i unmind,
embody, let
an ink-filled pipette pull
willy nilly marks
and loops
with whisper friction on paper,
meandering,
moment

to moment

  1. There is nothing better than finding moments in a highly scheduled day for an early morning walk and a time in the studio to let willy nilly lines meander on the paper.

    You sure have a way with words…and willy nilly lines!

    1. YES to finding moments when least expected on a crazily busy day!

      Thanks, MaryAnn, for your nod to my way with words and willy nilly lines—both, today, came from an urge to make space to experiment. I want to return to trying my hand at writing poetry, something I haven’t done with any frequency for a long long long time, and to get back into my studio with more frequency. Today’s post honors both of those intentions : )

    1. Nilly marks indeed!

      I could use some unminding right now; I’m in over my head with some computer tasks at the moment. gaaaaaa.

  3. You answered the invitation, Dotty, both in your lovely poem and with painted ink. Your muse is strong. 💚

    1. Thanks, Roseanne. I’m trusting my muse to partner with me to revise my daily rhythms to include increased activity in my studio.

  4. Love your poetry! Your discoveries in inks are amazing. Don’t know what inks you are using, try spraying with water, before or after!

    1. Thank you for your nod to my poetry. I am feeling a lovely pull towards growing my wordplay. And I’m feeling pulls towards a wide scattered range of artplay. Huh, didn’t think to spray with water; thx for the nudge : )

  5. Don’t know if you noticed but the image on email notification opens up larger and can be enlarged full size! On post not, but can be opened on a new tab.

    1. Simone, thank you! This post marks the pull I feel to widen the lens of my creative practice to include the exploration of writing poetry in a more focused way than previously.
