Absolutely from Scratch

Every year a given tree
creates absolutely from scratch
ninety-nine percent of its living parts.
A big elm
in a single season
might make as many as
six million leaves,
wholly intricate,
without budging an inch;

I couldn't make one.

                                     Annie Dillard
                     Pilgrim at Tinker Creek

Without budging from my studio, scratching my head in wonder and bemusement, unlike Annie Dillard I do create—absolutely from scratch—a handful of wholly intricate leaves! Woo hoo!

Memories of the smells of fall, the rustling of the leaves as I lick them going to school, the intoxicating colors and the crisp autumn air!

Awesome! Music to my ears that my from-scratch scrabbling and scratching around in no man's land landed me in a place that evinced such strong sensory memories, Carol. Couldn't be more delighted. Thank you for letting me know.

oh oh oh! How wonderful to see your process in this piece! So intuitive and transformative! It is like a little peek into your head as you follow the paint...scribbles become that precious, brief moment when the leaves have turned and are still attached to the tree - I gasp a little. So beautiful!!!

Jen, thanks for your appreciation of process! This little journey intrigued me as I followed its twists and turns. As uncomfortable as the ugly stages can be—and they are, for me!—they lead me to both deep inner work and outer frustration, which together propel me forward to unexpected delights. I just have to keep jumping into not knowing. With both feet. Thanks for witnessing and celebrating the jumps!

WOWzers! You had me at six million leaves. Firebursts - WOW! Then to see the transformations. You are a transformer! Super hero! Wonderful texture - I want to touch my screen! Haha ;)

Sheila, greetings! Thanks for your infectious enthusiasm! Your words are letting me recreate the joyful feelings of transformation that took place as this piece evolved. I loved the texture that developed—and was touching it in real time right up until I put it in the mailbox to wing its way west!
