Early Morning Walk on Long Island Sound / July 6, 2026

Early Morning Walk on Long Island Sound

new build

fragrant fresh lumber,
hammer strokes syncopating
memory music

dotty seiter

Notes about poem and art:
• “new build” is my final Sisterfest26 haiku, and it packs a personal punch with here-and-now sensory treasures from a sparkling, sunny morning walk and simultaneous memories of Cranford, NJ, in the early 1950’s. Can you smell that fresh lumber? Can you hear Daddy banging his hammer?
Our Song, my final mood-mini of Sisterfest26, captures in me that of which Topol sings to Golde in Fiddler on the Roof, “Oh, what a happy mood she’s in.”

  1. There is nothing like the smells of nature, the earth after rain, grass freshly cut and the fragrance of fresh cut wood.

Had to listen to Topol sing that melody, also reminded me of a short video about Kiki Smith where she described art making as a Luxury, that is if we choose to. See how rich we are!

Love your sun drawing! Lots of depth, light, warmth and general good feeling!

    1. It is a gift when a particular smell can instantly transport (especially if the smell and experience associated with it are pleasant!).

Thanks for the Kiki Smith video clip.

Thanks, too, for enjoying my sun drawing—your choice of the descriptors “depth, light, warmth and general good feeling” capture just the way both the sun itself and my porch drawing of it felt on that morning in June. Perfect!

  3. I smell the lumber! I see the moment! I love what you’ve accomplished with this haiku – a purely sensory memory perfectly recalled. And the art? SHAZAM! It’s a beauty! Perfection! xoxoxo

    1. Thanks, Lola! Love that you can smell the lumber and see the moment! It was a little microcosmic sensory memory burst when it took place, and I took pleasure in the construction workers’ collaborating with the beat of their hammers even though they had no idea. The art felt like a perfect pairing with this haiku : )

  4. I smell it! I can hear the sound. Memories of my uncles at work on one project or another.

I love your reference for Our Song. Fabulous Mini! xoxo

    1. I’m gratified at your being able to smell the lumber, hear the sound of the construction workers, tap into memories of your uncles at work on projects—that little haiku has done its job well!

Big smile here at your appreciation of the reference for Our Song.
