Poking Around Writing and Painting

Swords Drawn

i pin my spiny
thorny bristly thistle of
an afternoon to
the ground, but it flips me and
declares itself the victor.

Notes about poem and painting:
• “Swords” is another tanka, a five-line poetry form with syllables in lines of 5 , 7, 5, 7, 7. Such short forms delight me and they force me into précis mode which, as you may have noticed, isn’t where I always land in my poetry-writing!
• Harboring is card #19 in the exploratory series I’ve been generating off and on since July, and I am still learning, learning, learning the ins and outs of watercolor painting and loving every minute, the picking of spiky spiny prickly bristly thorny thistles notwithstanding!

    1. Carol, those thistles are colorful and needle-sharp—it’s no wonder they flipped my afternoon!!

Thank you for the thumbs up for my short sweet poems!

  2. Some days are like that….even in Australia. (Do you know that story about Alexander and The Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day?)

Absolute love the spiny thistle….especially paired with this poem.

And thanks for your appreciation of the pairing of thistle painting and poem. It was fun to link them up : )

    1. I just walked by my next-door thistle patch after lunch and the thistles are now throwing thistledown all about with wild abandon, as though Wonder Mike had suggested they do a beginning-of-October giveaway : )

      Yeah, poking around, tee hee!

I’m up to my elbows working on a 2026 calendar right now in which a few of my look-what’s-in-the-garden color swatches will make an appearance. I might be able to sneak one poem into the calendar format so thank you for activating that idea as an outgrowth of your suggestion above.

Haven’t got around to a book (yet) so thank you a second time for your suggestion above, because maybe I WILL make a book!

A calendar sounds lovely. I can just see and feel that book in my two hands, though…oooooh la la!

  4. And what a magnificent series of watercolor flowers-combinations you’ve made! Also, really interesting to learn that there are so many ‘fixed’ short forms in poetry – I only knew the famous haiku…

    1. Thanks for enjoying the watercolor flowers-combinations with me, Simone. The creation of this series has been so life-enhancing for me.

I, too, was surprised to learn about other fixed short forms in poetry, and I’ve had fun playing with them : )
