All Part of Something Bigger / July 25, 2025

All Part of Something Bigger

Inner Eye Wonderwide

i sit, legs curled
onto the seat cushion
of one of two comfy swivel chairs
perched near northeast windows
in our family room,
reading a novel
in the not insignificant
benediction of light
at 740p on an evening
in early june when

why now?

i understand that i

whatever it is that “i” signifies

am tethered
tenderly and
unfailingly
by forces invisible to me
to a massive
sphere of physical matter
spinning through what we call
outer space

and by understand i mean
that my body
 knows

knows
in every cell

the magnetic energy
the movement
the core stillness

the interconnected living wholeness
the spaciousness

the sure embrace
that holds
as we fly

oh! this pure
pure
knowing

oh
oh

oh

The Not Insignificant Benediction of Light

Notes about poem and art:
• “Inner Eye” reflects a sudden knowing, and it wrote itself in only slightly less sudden an outpouring.
• Not Insignificant came into being because I needed a postcard. A neurographic painting I’d created in 2022 caught my attention as I rummaged in my studio for fodder. It had already been cut into several potential bookmarks, three of which I now chose to cut in half again. Three of those halves volunteered to be partnered into a grouping, punctuated by a teeny scrap from an exercise painted in 2015 and found on the floor. Ta da—a postcard!!

  1. Art work: Don’t recall seeing that piece in “whole” condition. It must have been bigger that your usual smaller pieces. I like how you added printed collage pieces and bright touches of color.

I have to learn that poetry has to read more than once. Only on the second reading I had the feeling of what I think you wanted to convey or not. Poetry is words in their most abstract form. A feeling that where ever we are, what ever we are doing, is what we are supposed to be/do, as if somehow our body knows. I may be way off!

    1. Carol, thank you once again for your thoughtful comments—such a gift to have this ongoing exchange with you through our personal self-expression via art and words at our respective blogs. You’ve given me food for thought in exchange for my poem and postcard. The original art that eventually became the postcard you see here was a piece I made a few years ago, I think, and I was happy to upgrade it here to something more pleasing to my eye than in its earlier form. As for my poem, I delight in hearing interpretations! Once shared, any poem becomes a co-creation, and I thank you for co-creating with me, giving me new insights and seeing my words in new ways.

  2. What a powerful moment to fully realize we’re part of something much bigger. Most of us don’t allow ourselves to be still enough to feel the energy and movement. Thank you!

I always when you cut and collage and recreate older art and scraps into new treasures. The recipient of this postcard will be so pleased. It’s so playful and fun!

    1. MaryAnn, yes! A powerful moment. I’ve experienced such moments only a few times, when I can feel in my body and recognize with my mind the movement of this world of which my physical self is a part.

Thanks for your affirmation of my taking old bits to create something new. This piece challenged me from pretty early on in its journey all the way to this postcard!

  3. You assemble words, scraps of paper, bits of ephemera and tiny things found on the floor – and worlds appear! It is like magic! I am delighted, enchanted and filled with wonder! Wowza!

    1. Never thought of myself as a magician, but it does feel like magic that I can turn my attention and energy and making to what most lights me up and then have worlds appear! I have to laugh cuz “words, scraps of paper, ephemera and tiny things found on the floor” are definitely my jam!

And, BONUS: by following my heart I get to connect with the Lolas of the world, i.e. YOU!

  4. A beautiful poem, Dotty. For me, the core stillness and spaciousness comes when I’m at the ocean. Whether it’s calm and still, or turbulent and wild, there is a peace and oneness I feel.
    Love your collage. ♥️

    1. Thanks, Roseanne. The core stillness and spaciousness often come to me when I’m at the ocean also. The embodied knowing of the movement of the earth and my moving in its embrace—my actually feeling that movement—occurs only rarely for me.

      Thanks for loving my collage!

I am looking forward to painting soon this morning, perhaps outdoors. I am so loving the temperate (at the moment) air on my skin : )
