What I See

Notes about poem and art:
• “soulschool jigsaw” gave me a bit of a runaround. I drafted and revised and tweaked and rewrote, trying to discover exactly what it was I wanted to say while also adhering to traditional haiku format in this poem about the spiritual paradox of the mind as a barrier to true seeing; the irony of overanalyzing a poem about overanalyzing did not escape me!
• On the final morning of my June vacation, before packing up my art supplies to head home, I brushed freeform swirls and patches of water into each quadrant of a page in my sketchbook, then dropped watercolor into each. Now, weeks later, what I see in one quadrant is The Friend With the Messy Bun.

  1. First your knitting friend! If you didn’t point out that she was there I wouldn’t have picked her out! Now my eye goes straight to her eye which could have been just a oval shape!

Not that I mind meeting your friend and her high coiffure !

Don’t we all seek out the special pieces..sky…earth…tree, when doing a puzzle? I feel that it clear seeing and thinking!

Love the play of words: thinking/seeing/ sky/ puzzle!

Links with the puzzle pieces of your knitting friend along with the sky around her.

    1. The knitting friend makes me laugh! I wish I’d thought to photograph her when she was just a color field with no linework. Once I saw her, I couldn’t unsee her : )

Thanks for your musings and observations about thinking seeing sky puzzle. What I was exploring in my haiku (written weeks ago) was the way thinking/mind and being/soul communicate—and as I write this particular sentence, I’m also not sure I have the right words!

  2. Since you have given me permission to let a poem speak to me in any way that works….today’s was loud and clear. I am working on a puzzle that started with just shades of green. I was a bit frustrated and over thinking that it wasn’t going to enjoyable. I almost boxed it back up. But I shifted my strategy…ordered the green pieces by their shapes….and everything changed. What we see helps inform what we do…..which informs how we feel.

Like Carol….I might not have seen your knitting friend without some guidance. But now she is clear as day…..and brings me delight. What we say helps inform what we see…which informs how we feel.

    Pure joy!

    1. MaryAnn, so grateful for your once-again thought-ful consideration of my poem and art. What a gift to have my words, written in service of my own life investigations, touched and served you also, speaking to you “loud and clear.” The best! Love your insights and change of strategy with your current jigsaw puzzle.

LOL about my knitting friend! Makes me think about real live people I’ve known whom I perhaps didn’t notice until I did, and then with delight!

  4. Ah, the sky pieces…where did those other non-sky pieces go??? You’re right to be looking for them xo

    1. No kidding, where are those non-sky pieces?

I do know deeply they are there.

Within easy reach (though I use the word “easy” loosely), i.e. they are accessible, always have been, always are.
