At Ease in the Presence of Instability

Notes about poem and art:
• “Perfect,” with a mere seventeen syllables, puts me right back on Whidbey Island on the bluff, on the beach, in that fleece blanket.
• At Ease took considerable finagling when I reached the part of the artistic process in which I needed to stage my painting and props, make multiple decisions, handle berries that wanted to roll around, and work with lighting conditions that were far from favorable. Even so, I was relatively at ease in the presence of all that instability! These exquisite leaves and berries charmed me on the trails at the Pratt Preserve on Whidbey.

  1. So few words tell a wonderful story!

Wow, that is the fall that I miss! Bright colors, I am going with all my beauty! Beautiful piece. Making stability with unstability!

  2. It’s a Wednesday in November eight weeks later on the east coast instead of the west, but I can FEEL the experience conveyed by those few syllables in “Perfect”—happy to hear that those few words tell a wonderful story to you as well : )

Aren’t those fall colors fabulous? They were unusual because next to nothing else was turning color where we were in the Pacific Northwest in September and because the leaves were the waxy stiff leaves of the sort that holly leaves are, very different from the softer more flexible leaves of the northeast that I associate with vivid color in the fall.

    Thanks for your comments, Carol!

  3. I can feel the coziness of the nap under the fleece blanket and I take great delight in swatch #27 from your series. I love the colors and the image of you managing the exquisite roly-poly props. Well done!

    1. MaryAnn, your mention of the nap under the fleece blanket takes me right back there, AGAIN! I’d move a sizable ottoman in front of a sizable upholstered chair, then position myself, cocooned in fleece, with head and back on ottoman and chair seat and my legs raised up and draped over the chair back, with huge windows to my right overlooking Puget Sound maybe 20 feet away. Divine!

Thanks for your appreciation of the colors and rolypoliness of my props; not only did the berries roll, but also the leaves would rock in one direction or the other along the axis of the central vein at the LEAST little accidental touch from my hand or another leaf—a veritable herd of cats, I tell ya!

  6. Today I was sitting in our garden (almost too cold, but still), with an autumn leaf of our fig in my hand, amazed by all the small nuances of color, lines, shapes, all so marvelous! So much fun that you have the same kind of experience in a completely different place.

    I LOVE the Colors!

    1. Simone, wow, such a surprise and delight to have you about 6000 miles and two months away from when I spied and painted the colors of the foliage depicted above but both of us sharing a very similar experience!!
