Esso

My dad worked as a chemical engineer for Esso for his entire work career. Now, even though my dad retired decades ago, when my sisters and I visit him in Maine we love eating our servings of store-brand espresso chip ice cream from china coffee cups bearing the Esso logo.

Wait. What?

Gesso?

You asked about gesso?

Oh.

Yes, I used gesso to paint over my current work in progress last evening.

Great fun. Spread it loosely over the whole canvas, scribbled in it with a stylus, pressed a stencil or two into the wet paint, went to bed.

What a coincidence! My father graduated as a chemical engineer. He was supposed to work for Kodak but because of the depression and he already had a family, went into the family photofinishing business.
Love how this piece is developing. Love the calmness the white veil has obtained. Love the subtle touches of texture in the detail shots!

Gotta love those chemical engineers : )

Carol, thanks for your comments. I'm in somewhat of a what-the-heck-am-I-doing funk at the moment, and your observations of the calmness of the white veiling and your appreciation of the subtle touches of texture give me heart. Grateful.

ha ha ha! Love your sense of humor! Esso and Gesso! Hooray! I think 90% of my paintings now have gesso mixed with paint in a chalky glaze over parts of them. It is the great mute button of painting. It softens everything and creates nuances that seem complicated but are not. Love where this piece is going!

Happy that you got a chuckle out of my sense of humor—glad that I entertained more than just myself! I appreciate your comments re use of gesso, and your welcome encouragement with where this piece might be going.
