The White Rabbit’s Obsession

Time (Mis)Management

can’t yet … not right now …
gotta, gotta … in a sec …
don’t have time … hang on …

Notes about poem and art:
• “Time (Mis)” is a haiku originally penned in 2009. I dusted it off to post here today as a prelude to my next post.
• In creating The Quiet, challenges inherent in this series of color swatches once again totally engaged me. I had to block out time to move from start to finish in one go, from taking snips of our Strawberry Smoothie Rose of Sharon shrub, to keeping the snips fresh while I painted, to snagging an image before everything wilted. The photography was particularly tricky—keeping the flower fresh, making sure it was dry and wouldn’t reactivate the paint, positioning it so as to showcase the deep color at each petal’s base (chose to remove some petals), and capturing shadows that’d elevate rather than detract. Way fun!

  2. The poem depicts our constant battle with time. Not enough! Curious about the next post……

Developing three arts in one post. The colorful watercolor and great photography and poetry!

You are so blessed with such a colorful garden!

    1. Carol, you’ve picked up on all the elements here—thank you! My relationship with time plays a hefty role in my day-to-day living. It was fun to pull out this haiku from many years ago as part of taking an up-close-and-personal look at that relationship.

And then “my” garden, which is 99.99% Dave’s garden. That’s his spiritual home/endeavor for months of the year. This year, it has been my great honor and pleasure to document it, bit by bit, both with paint and photography, each with its challenges and nourishment.

  3. Love this simple and compelling poem. Looking forward to the next post.

This quiet swatch painting is stunning…and I loved hearing about every step along the way. The perfectly placed petals and subtle shadows are what I love best. But I love it all! Well done. Again!

    1. MaryAnn, thank you for your keen eye and sensibility to the energy of art, both its creation and the creation that comes from the making process. I so appreciate your noticings and your way of writing reflections about what you perceive. I love knowing that you can fully imagine, as though you were doing the creating yourself, what it felt like to place those petals and to audition various patterns of shadow. Such a gift, your feedback!

    1. Replying from a rented cabin in the middle of Washington state somewhere, so we’ll see if I can get complete sentences to you! I confess, I am most eager to hear the end to your sentence beginning with “You had me …”

In any case, enjoy your rented shack by the sea, the sea itself, and each other!

  5. White rabbit! Glad you caught the reference—not everyone would have! Thanks for making the effort to battle the truly spotty wifi. Something about your simple phrase of “pinks and greens and haiku” was delighfully lyrical.

  6. Love, love, love. That juicy raspberry color is so enticing. Your haiku echoed my day, gone before I knew it. LOL. I enjoyed reading about your graphic elements of design. They make for a perfect presentation. 🙂 This is a truly gorgeous bloom. I love how you placed one stamen off on it’s own. 🙂

Thanks for joining me in enjoying these gorgeous colors, and for noticing that one stamen off on its own : )
