Pondering the Cosmos / September 1, 2025

Pondering the Cosmos

Speculating With Curiosity

i wonder why
i never before stopped
to wonder about the difference
between
 wonder the verb
and
 wonder the noun.
i see that when i say
i wonder
i really mean something
more pedestrian
and everyday than wonder
as awe, more like
i ponder or,
as my dictionary puts it,
speculate with curiosity.
i wonder what it would be like if
when i started a sentence with
i wonder
i infused the word
wonder
with
wonder.

Notes about poem and art:
• Vis a vis “Speculating,” don’tcha just wonder what-all other folks are wondering about in those minds of theirs as they go about their business?
• And I Wonder, featuring cosmos flowers in this 9th color-swatch study, has me wondering what additional flowers and other bits of the natural world represented in my yard and gardens I’ll grab with the purpose of trying my hand and eyes at simulating their colors with my humble watercolors. Card #9 was the final card I mailed to Caroline at camp, now being asynchronously posted here at my blog well after she returned home. Before camp ended, however, she thought to capture this photo inside her cabin:

cards to Caroline at camp!

    1. So much wonder and wondering!

It was such fun for me to see Caroline’s photo, to know those Camp Takodah cabins so well, to have been a leader there myself back in the day, and to remember some of the items I perched on the cabin studs myself. Caroline was duly appreciative of my art and my keeping in touch that way while she was at camp, and I am a happy Gma!

    2. Love your wonderings, (that started my own). Love the fun, summery patches of color. Like popsicles or jelly beans. Treats on a warm summer’s day. Love Caroline’s gallery. Joy multiplied.

This post filled me with wonder. Admiration, as always for your joy filled ways. And wondering, what gorgeous gift you will think up next. :o) Happy creating, Dotty!

      1. Sheila, thank you so much for your affirmations of my creative play. I so value being in conversation about the wonderings and adventures. I’m enjoying watercolor so much more than I’d ever thought I might. I’m signed up for a one-hour class in town at our senior center on Friday, and I’m eager to see what that class turns out to be.

  2. Wonder full! What a deep deep magenta! Here end of summer and all is brown. I seem to recall another poem “I Wonder…” Can’t quite put my finger on it.

    1. Thanks, Carol! Your “wonder full” response is wonderful! And, yes, what a deep deep magenta! If you’re able to put your finger on the other “I Wonder” poem that is tickling your brain, let me know!

      1. I kept looking, knew it was Walt Whitman, but mixed up wander with Wonder. "I wandered lonely as a cloud” well he could have wondered about being a cloud

  3. What came to me was “I Wonder as I Wander,” a Christian folk hymn, typically performed as a Christmas carol, written by American folklorist and singer John Jacob Niles. Not sure you’d be familiar with it : )
