Notes about poem and art:
• “Zooming” harkens back to pre-retirement days when Dave and I would sneak off to take ourselves on impromptu “speed dates” on a workday morning. Now we have all day every day to date hahaha!; we have plenty of time to idle in neutral, far less need to zoom anywhere.
• Settling gave me a chance to appreciate the slowed down pace Dave and I have now as I appreciated signs of our garden’s also slowing down in August. For this piece, I focused on some neutrals that provided a backdrop for the many bright colors still strutting their stuff in our gardens. This lupine has graciously yielded to knowing it has already had its day in the spotlight and is now quietly preparing for next year’s opening day. I especially loved painting the pop of rust red infused in one of its leaves.

  1. Poem, short and sweet as the stolen moment!

I could feel the fall in your colors theme! Yes, that pop is so exciting. Love your description of the Lupine that knows that it’s prime is over, with the hope for the next season. Something we all can learn from!

    1. Carol, thanks for your exquisite poetic comment about my haiku! and for your nods to both the (muted) color pop and the lupine life cycle—I’m so appreciative!

  2. The coffee date at eight poem makes me smile from ear to ear. We all need to do things like that with intention….even in idle retirement!

Your swatch painting captures the wabi-sabi end of summer beautifully.

    Have a wonderful trip!

    1. Thanks, MaryAnn! Those particular coffee dates were such fun and, as you say, we all need to do such things with intention even in idle retirement. Dave and I have been dating for decades : )

You are a key player in my dialing more deeply into wabi-sabi all around me with appreciation and joy, for which I thank you tremendously and often.

  4. Joje, I’m sorry you had difficulty posting a comment but I’m grateful that you did and that it found its way through. Thank you!

What you see above is a photograph of (a) watercolor swatches that I painted paired with (b) the actual dried columbine I used as my reference to mix colors to match. So, yes, I DID publish a photo of the lupine : )

That’s the format for all my posts for this color swatches series.

  5. dotty!!! These earthy neutrals are my favorite! And the daily date… Malcolm and I create in different parts of our house and then meet in the kitchen for lunch every day. It is the sweetest! xo

  7. Sheila, thanks for settling in to share with me the delights of dates at eight, textured muted colors, and pops of less-muted color! The sharing is such a tremendous aspect of the creative/co-creative process : )
