Inspiration-Wind

In her charming and informative book, Mozart's Starling, Lyanda Lynn Haupt comments, about her writing process:

I have come to terms with the sad truth that inspiration never visits at my convenience, nor in accordance with my sense of timing, nor at the behest of my will. Most of all, the inspiration-wind has no interest whatsoever in what I think I want to write about.

Yeah, about that inspiration-wind.

Started fiddling today with a new patch as part of my still-ongoing project, Core Values. Every now and then, the tiniest tease of a breeze. Mostly, nothing.

journaling and mark-making
adding color, scratching wet paint
penciling irregular pentagons

First start then maybe the wind of inspiration will follow! Have to listen to my own advise. Love those lines, missing the script!

Good thing we cheer each other on, yes? Indeed, we have to meet the chance of inspiration halfway by STARTING. Something. Anything. Although a just-do-SOMEthing start may not have the joy of inspired flow, it can be fun to poke around investigatively into unexpected terrain. And, how ironic is it that, having done so, we end up being sad when some part of that just-do-SOMEthing start gets painted over later?!

Just new beginnings! No sadness in that!

I just received my copy of the book! Can't wait to crack it open. Inspiration....yep, no control over that. All we can do is show up and take a step toward it every day in hopes the muse decides to grace us with her presence. I am working on a muse-summoning dance. I'll let you know if it works. :)

Our discussion makes me reflect on what children learn about the creative process as they grow and create. Seems like many (most?) of us end up, sooner rather than later, with heaps of unlearning to do. I am so glad to have come to new understandings about creativity in my own life—showing up every day, as you say. Looking forward to seeing your muse-summoning dance—you always offer such wonderful YouTube clips at your blog : )

Unlearning. Love that Dotty. YES! Love seeing the transformation ;)

Lots of unlearning, don't you think? Have you found that to be true? Followed by all sorts of new learning, such as embracing rather than resisting transformation!
