Postscript to Invitation

p.s.

I forgot yesterday to include a photo of the piece over which I painted to create It's Hard to Pinpoint an Exact Moment

In September of 2015 I completed an exercise that was posted as a challenge at dailypaintworks.com in which contributors were invited to paint an odd-shaped shadow. One of my responses to the challenge was to paint the shadows cast onto our driveway by giant dahlias that were in bloom in Dave's garden. I captured the dark gray shadows on the lighter gray driveway and included a few bright red petals that had fallen.

seeing the underpainting is kinda like seeing celebrities in their underwear....a little scandalous and fascinating all at once! I love the way it ended up "dressed" in its finest gown!

Your description is a provacative DELIGHT, Jen!

It was funny to let go of the original. It wouldn't even occur to me to showcase it anywhere for possible sale, nor can I imagine a prospective buyer (tho I HAVE come to understand that it not really for me to know who might be a prospective buyer), so in that regard, easy to paint over. At the same time, though, I have next to NO ability to see this piece other than through my own eyes, and when I see it through my eyes I am right back in the driveway on a hot, sunny late September day.

Those shadows are intriguing and beautiful, Dotty! I urge you to do another shadow painting!

Thanks for thinking to make an explicit invitation, Laurie. Shadow shapes carry all sorts of intriguing abstract possibilities, methinks. Fun!

I love the idea of the odd-shaped shadows! Nature is providing us with so much inspiration, every day! We only have to open our eyes, to see it. Or read your blog posts ;-)

Indeed, nature has so many scribbles and lines and shapes and colors and textures for us : )

I LOL when I got to your closing comment! Thank you!

I am going to look at shadows in a whole different way! Those little touches of red....perfect!

Going back to this painting is a lovely reminder to me, too, to take a new look at shadows. Those touches of red were so much fun, especially since they were actually representational : )

Thanks for your comments, Janet!

I love shadows and often photograph them. They are here and then gone in a fleeting moment or movement of the clouds and sun. So good to see them through your lovely quilt!

Thanks, Carol. Light and shadow—that's what painting is all about : )

So nice to see those shadows again. Spend some time with them. Seems like I am seeing this everywhere, or, over and over. Here, the challenge, IG. And each time I am thrilled, and happy, and have to take it all in once more. today I am loving the small circle with warm and cool, and pink. Delightful :)

Fun to have you draw my attention to the small circle with warm, cool, and pink; fun to know that it used to be the intersection of four corners in my grid composition; fun to hear that you enjoyed spending some time with the shadows again.

Thanks, Sheila!
