Off to the Races

Oh my gosh, did I ever have fun stepping out of my same-old-same-old over the weekend. No solitude in this studio! No indecision or precious grasping here!

While in Virginia, 8-year-old granddaughter Emmy asked, Gma, do you want to paint?

Next thing I knew she had a plastic cloth spread over the kitchen table; canvases set up for herself, me, and Caroline; paints and brushes out; three palettes in place; and a cup of water at hand for rinsing brushes.

Then we were off and galloping, no one holding any reins that I could see.

You want paint? Squeeze a whole bunch out of a tube.

You want a different color? Mix wildly.

Brush not doing what you want? Use your fingers.

How wonderful! Loved doing that with my grand-sons, but lately they have other activities! :( Kudos... Love them all! Emmy, delicious blueberries! Caroline, wonderful abstract, great title! Gma, looks like a Monet in progress!

Carol, get together and paint with those grandsons again, other activities be damned! It's such a great way to tap your inner child : )

Painting with Caroline and Emmy brought back bodied memories of painting as a child myself. The best!

Blueberry trees!!!! Yum! And that work in progress...do I see some MONET going on in those watery flower shapes?

Aren't those blueberry trees grand fun? I watched them grow organically with my very own eyes. Emmy gave not a second thought to adding layer after layer as she painted, letting the painting take her in a direction, and then stopping with ease when she felt done. // I think I WAS channeling my inner Monet once I got going, though that wasn't where I started. Fun for me.

Wow, wow, WOW!!! I love everything about these paintings and how they came to be. A memory — and paintings — to treasure forever!

Thanks, Joje! Painting with those girls really was F - U - N. My painting life is usually a very solitary activity, and rarely such an uninhibited undertaking!

The paintings are great - but the memories made even better! Emmy and Caroline's paintings have such a free and spontaneous feel to them and so does yours Dotty! Love your 'inner Monet'. Please pass on to your granddaughters how much we are all enjoying their artwork....ahhhh to paint like a child....

Janet, as your comment recognizes: SUCH a gift to paint with those girls, at THEIR initiative and following THEIR lead. I got to tap into the child in me so much more fully than is usually the case. It was a deliciously wild ride! I'll be sure to share all the feedback with them. Thank you!

Nothing better, Dotty! Lucky children and lucky you to spend that time together. And the creations! Can’t wait to see what you do with that beautiful “Monet”!

Thanks, Laurie! How are your TWO new little grandbabies and their mom doing? Think of them often.

Blueberry trees, gorgeous pattern and style! Beeswax, awesome textures and composition! WIP, ver reflective, and dreamy, and yes Monet-ish! Such fun, that will be remembered I am sure.

Thanks for your thoughtful reflections, Sheila. Yes, I'm still basking in that painting time with C&E. Much to learn from those girls : )
