Q&Q Cut-Up #1

On a deliciously warm sunny October day, I sneak a little studio time to bring my first quick & quixotic cut-up to completion.

When first extracted from the 16x20" whole, as a 4x5" part, it looked like this:

Now it looks like this:

Surface, Sky, Whirlpool, Wave
4x5", acrylic, ink, collage, and oil pastel on canvas,
mounted on manila card stock
abstract

I seem to be caught in your whirlpool! Love the texture of the sky!Tissue paper over scripts?

Thanks for your comments, Carol.

Something about that whirlpool motion was very appealing to me. And I had fun creating the sky. On top of some textures already in place when I began developing this cut-up, I added print matter collage, veiled it with acrylic paint, and topped it with some stenciling (using acrylic paint on a piece of dry-wall mesh tape).

I love it when a piece of paper suddenly transforms in a landscape!

That line across the top of the water....yum. The texture in the sky...delicious. The movement in the whirlpool!!! And, of course, the title. You have a way with words, dear Dotty!!

And each element of it so abstract and 'non meaningful' by itself. It's magic, I tell ya!

Thanks, Simone.

The line across the top of the water: teeny bits of an acrylic skin I'd painted before my WV vacation, pieced together here so as to create something other than a level horizon line.

The sky: pre-existing textures, on top of which I glued bits of print matter collage, which I then veiled with acrylic paint using my fingers, all of which I topped with stenciling using paint on a scrap of dry-wall mesh.

The whirlpool: just loved creating it.

The title: thanks for your kind words about my way with words. Love words; love the wordlessness of painting—I think you love those very same things.

OOPs, opened these backwards. So in love with these colors! And I love the top of this, the wonderfully wonky line, and the collage. The swirls below, and the layering of hues!!!
Last night after I shut the lights off, I thought I might take some oil pastels to the small pieces I am working on. And here you are inspiring me again ;) Think I will! LOL

Always happy to inspire—I'll look to see if you break out your oil pastels.

I had such fun developing the top and bottom parts of this painting in ways to provide contrast, with the wonky line between.
