Hung Out to Dry

At home, after washing clothes I throw them into the drier.

But once a year, at camp, wet clothes—mostly bathing suits and towels—get hung by hand, on a length of rope, outdoors, using wooden clothespins, to dry, usually in shade. Those clotheslines outside each cabin are a favorite iconic element of Takodah scenery.

One of my strongest early sensory memories of camp—and not a favorite!—is of struggling to get a cold damp clammy bathing suit pulled up over my shivering resisting skin.

The towels on the line in my painting are torn bits of collage from a camp publication. At the moment, though still damp with matte medium, they're catching a warm August afternoon breeze.

So sweet, that laundry is eye catching! What a great card! Exciting and energetic, and yet the hint of soft breeze soothes me.
Might have to do with knowing they are still wet, and won't need folding anytime soon! LOL

laundry on the line...simpler times, no hurry, breezes and stiffening clothes...your camp posts are conjuring so many memories for me! But the damp bathing suit over resisting skin - ugh. Too real! haha!

Hi Dotty, so good to be back! Love this small wonderful painting, and love your poetic description of the wet bathingsuit!

It's summertime, summertime, sum sum summertime.....and Ruth's card, so alive with personality! And Incognito, I love those "groups" of color! And your 2015 painting of the cabin. I remember it (if it's the one I'm thinking). And the laundry out to dry.....so cool that they are bits of camp info. Wow! I love seeing your work day by day. But it's also fun to bite off lots of it at once. Makes for lots of good reading and beautiful visuals. Thank you for sharing your life and adventures, Dotty!

Love this!!! Hard to realize that this is a WIP!!! Nice divisions and delicate textures. Wooden clothes pins! Do they still exist?

Thanks for your comments, Sheila. Laundry on the line always catches my eye in a happy way—as it did all week at camp (just got home about an hour ago). I won't take these items off the line, but I will fiddle with this painting a bit more to put on a few finishing touches.

Those simpler times of hanging laundry out to dry and washing dishes by hand do call out to me, even though I now only make such homemaking an intermittent part of my life, mostly on vacations we take.

Simone, SO happy to have you back online after your long summer holiday. So ironic that you returned literally as I headed out the door to camp. I have now returned home (just an hour ago) and I look forward to your painting again regularly and our exchanging ideas and comments back and forth. Yay!

Laurie, thank you for your reflective comments and overview—you give me lovely perspective when you "bite off lots" of my blog at once. I am grateful to have you as a follower : )

Thanks for your comments, Carol! I don't anticipate making major changes with this piece, but I DO plan to go in to take another look and bring it to a place that feels finished to my eye.

Wooden clothespins do indeed still exist. Used them all week at camp : )
