Blink!

Picture two young parents, several teachers, a psychometrician, and myself sitting around a large table, sharing information, and planning thoughtfully to meet the needs of a bright shiny energetic mop-topped rising first grader.

Picture that I begin meeting weekly in one-to-one tutorial sessions with this wonderful mop-topped child to support him in his educational journey.

Picture a parade of syllables, math facts, yawns, world maps, topic sentences, laughter, questions, answers, assignment notebooks, partnership, paragraphs, three-ring binders, intellectual curiosity, pencils, erasers, worksheets, test prep, essays, and research papers.

Picture a hip young man—mop-top long gone in favor of a straightened, half-red, undercut 'do' with a high temple fade and some racing stripes on one side—about to graduate from eighth grade and start high school in the fall.

Hours turn into days, days to months, months to year, all gone with the flicker of an eye. As I look at this I also see the shutters of my window half open and my Hibiscus bush showing though sometimes with a little honeyeater fluttering through.

LOL. Yup. Love how this so wonderfully fits with your narrative. The lines and stitching somehow seem... scholarly. The curving lines and colors are fun, youthful, exploratory. And the colorful frame is like a graduation cap. Proper and celebratory.
Just fun all around :)

I can see you sitting there with this little guy. You absolutely should start writing a poetry-book. Please do! (I know I am driving you crazy right now since there are not enough hours in the day right now!)

Carol, as I used to say, any one baseball game my son played lasted forEVER, but the entirety of his school years went by in a flash!

LOVE the half open shutters, the hibiscus, the honeyeater. Thank you!

Sheila, so appreciative of your interpretation. This piece had a glorious carefree beginning, a messy intractable middle, and a barely-accomplished rescue in the end; I'm happy to have it be seen as a bit-more-than-barely : )

Simone, love that I was able to paint a word picture of my student. Thank you again for encouraging me to start a poetry book—keep doing so, because, who knows?, writing could well become a more focused part of my creative adventure!

Love this post! Time goes so fast...then they are all grown. Your words and the art capture that blink of an eye!!!

Thanks, Jen. Glad to know I captured what I hoped to. Are you writing to me from NC??? I'm honored! How's it going?

I think the combination of the two is just fabulous. It would absolutely fit you so well!

Keep talking to me—I need ways to expand my vision here : )

I will! ;-)

I love everything about this post and the painting. You drew me in with your story telling and then the painting. Not a 'barely' Dotty - you got this one spot on! I can't wait for a book of your writings, poetry and paintings. Have a very happy day!!

Janet, thanks for your thoughtful feedback. If you're willing, could you please tell me one or two particulars that make the painting 'spot on' in your eyes? My objectivity has gone askew with this one because of some glitches en route that sabotaged my intentions partway through. Thanks.
