Jan 2017 30in30, Day 21

I back up again to where I left off a few days ago:

5x8" work in progress

I take my 5x8 to class.

But not to just any class.

This class is held in my studio, and it's run apprentice style—a student-mentor arrangement.

Here's the twist: I'm the only student in a studio full of mentors!

I follow Janet Bradish's lead and look for shapes in the paint I've previously spread on the page.

With Sheila Delgado's Mingus Mountains' making repeat appearances this month, I see Mingus Mountain shapes.

Carol Edan comments that black marker scares her out of her wits; I take her statement as a call to arms.

Laurie Mueller reminds me of the delight of using negative space.

Courtesy of Judy Jacobs, I have the impact of neutrals in mind.

And Ophelia Staton gives me the staying power to just keep showing up. As she says, "Welp, right back here tomorrow!"

Gee, wish you wouldn't talk about me in such "negative" terms! Haha-thank you for the shout and for giving us part of the credit for your work! A cool landscape is what I'm seeing here!

You know me, always see the negative in your work!

HAPPY to give you a shout any time : )

Definitely heading in a landscape direction. Well, until it doesn't.

Oh no, it's contagious! I see you have mountain fever! I love the black in this Dotty. Rugged. Indomitable. Love your mix of colors, the marks and previous layers showing thru. Awesome start, I mean middle. LOL Looking forward to your tomorrow.
Thanks so much for the shout out! Such an honor to be mentioned, especially along with these supremely talented WOMEN. Thank you Dotty :)

All I can say is I am in AWE! Thanks for the mention, but you are my MENTOR this month, I have learned so much from watching your explorations and results. Thanks for reminding me of neutrals and negative spaces, and that it's easy to use a black marker... Hear that Carol, it's easy to use a black marker. Love the piece so far... especially the breathing room in your negative space!

Mountain fever! Caught it from you! Thanks for your comments—LOL re your saying "start, I mean middle." You got THAT right! More than happy to give you a shout out : )

We're all each other's mentors in so many ways—it's the best!

Black paint marker … easy peasy! : )

Appreciate your appreciation of the breathing room in the negative space. Will it self-sustain???

That's for you to decide and us to see!

And I'm just a delighted, usually invisible, audience to this wonderful artistic adventure! Love this, Dotty!

Carol … OR that's for the painting to decide and ALL of us to see!

Carolyn, good morning! I love that you cheer me on from behind the scenes on an ongoing basis, and that today you made your self visible and your cheers audible—thanks!

The colors in this one draw me in, and the neutral spaces help to keep me calm! Keep on keeping on Dotty!

Thanks for the feedback, Gillian. Always happy when I can help keep someone else calm : )

For sure, I'll keep on keeping on.

Good morning Dotty! First to the important things....This is so beautiful - the colour the textures - I keep coming back for another and another look. I have never used a black marker like you have and it is wonderful. I don't think I would have been as bold with it and your lines and shading are strong and confident. You have wonderful resting places in the Mingus range and then I go on to look at the contours of the mountains. This is such a great paintings! Thank you for mentioning me in today's post. I have never had that happen before and you made my day. I agree with you that we are all mentors in one way or another. Looking at other's artist's work gives me so much inspiration. What luck to have connected with you on this 30in30. I look forward to seeing more paintings and keeping in touch in the months to come.

Janet, thanks for all your observations and comments. The black paint markers are fun; they were new to me this fall. The one I used above has a tip that has dimensions of roughly 1/2 x 1/8"—I didn't draw with it, per se, but rather created my Mingus contours by pressing the tip in place repeatedly to make a rustic line so to speak. Not sure if I've found the right words here; let me know if you have questions.

I, too, look forward to an ongoing conversation (EVEN THOUGH I still haven't resolved the blog subscription snafu).

I will be seeing my son this week and see if he can help with the blog. Sorry for the inconvenience! It's great when it works but a frustration when not.

Thank you!!! If he's able to resolve the situation and you're willing (and able!) to tell me what the fix was, that'd be terrific. Thank your son for me, regardless of outcome.
