ATMOSPHERE & SHAPES, Day 1

For lesson 10, the final lesson of my Jane Davies class, each participant had to devise her own lesson with the goal of staying narrow and going deep. It was harder to come up with a lesson than I thought it'd be.

My Lesson Objectives:

Investigate atmosphere and shapes on 9x9" cheap drawing paper, with all paintings having (a) an atmospheric background in the same color palette and (b) shapes as the focal point.

---

What I Did:

Backstory: I created two pieces based on an early draft of my lesson parameters and realized that I actually wasn't clear on what I meant by atmospheric background! These pieces led me to think that it's possible to have depth without a feeling of atmosphere (whereas I'm not sure it's possible to have atmosphere without depth). In any case, I remembered a downloadable workshop I did back in January—thanks, Jane!—in which the final lesson was Atmosphere. I revisited that lesson, watched the video numerous times, studied the pieces I created last winter … and revised my current lesson objectives to read as they appear above.

Setting up your own parameters COOL!!! Really love exploration b... looks like atmospheres inside of an atmosphere. Wondering what was the definition/concept you were looking for. Both are so different.

An engaging challenge in its own right, to set up the parameters for an exploration into visual language. Jane helped us refine our thinking so our objectives were clear, specific, and limited, with tight constants and restricted variables. As I keep posting this lesson, I think you'll get more of a sense of what I was after with my atmosphere definition/exploration. But, if not, let me know!

Space... the final frontier! What a fearless explorer you are! I love them both. The wonky lines, the layers peeking thru, the globe shapes, and oh that turquoise in both is sooooo appealing to me! I know it is because of how it relates to all the colors around it. LOVE!

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, Sheila. You'd probably love the underpainting for each of the above. I was in total joyous flow when painting them, and they were filled with bright cheery colors. I have one as my phone wallpaper now.

As always I am so superimpressed how deep you dive in the exercises, Dotty! I love the colours, the purple! I have been sort of avoiding that colour for a long time. Maybe I should start exploring that one too;-)

Thanks, Simone, for your support of my deep diving! Each of these paintings started with Simone-style color splashes covering the whole page—I was so happy painting them. I like purple!
