IMPROV, Day 1
Lesson 6, improvisational painting. Maximal variety, this time in color. Let your visual imagination wander around, looking at the trees, not the forest. Variety can come from color value, saturation, hue; geometric shapes, organic shapes; hard, ragged, soft, and broken edges; small, large, dense, and sparse pattern; differing qualities of line; transparent and opaque layering; painting; drawing with pen, graphite, and crayon; using sgraffito technique; using a brayer; stamping; lifting paint; stenciling; removing paint with alcohol; and/or whatever else your little improvisational mind comes up with.

Lovin' your responsissimo, Sheila! I had fun creating this piece, and I'm appreciating it anew as I look at it this morning. Had I ever set out to paint the heat of glowing embers, I suspect I would have felt frustrated in the creating and disappointed in the results—but looky what came from improvising!

Ann, thanks. This was a fun piece that started with free-form color areas using up leftover paint on my palette from prior studies. Variety and improvisation were the goals, not composition or color planning, and all sorts of happy outcomes came from playing in that way.
Great to get your feedback, Carol. I like the glowing 'sun,' too, and its counterpart cool 'moon' off to the left. You may well SEE a heizer in there, but I did not PAINT a heizer. Painting is 6x6".

Thanks for clarification, Carol! I knew we were talking about letting go, a topic always near and dear to my heart, as it is an ongoing life invitation and challenge. I knew this class would offer up many a chance to let go. Yup! Sometimes I'm right in there playing freely, and sometimes I'm hanging on tight with the inner me fighting tooth and nail.
