Halfway Between Here and There

I returned home from camp yesterday after eight days away.

My bags are halfway unpacked.

My studio is halfway reassembled.

My brain is at half-mast.

Here's one of my sketches from camp, now in the light of day rather than the half-darkness of the space where I painted it.

5x7" sketch

Today I am mentally halfway between home and camp, emotionally halfway between any kind of here or there.

I felt the need to make some big brush strokes so I picked up the 30x30" canvas I purchased in early July. I'd scribbled and brayed it about seven weeks ago. Now I've added some layers.

30x30" work in progress

yay!!!
Love to see you painting on the bigger canvas! I like this layers that are curious what will become of them!
It is nice that a painting has a life of its own, and this is another step in its growth. Beautiful!

Simone, SO lovely to have your curiosity and excitement. Thank you.

I feel very betwixt and between and scattered and overwhelmed right now. I have no idea where I am going with my painting—not any single painting, not painting in general!

My reflexive reaction to returning from vacation to a month that will be unusually full is to feel panic knocking at my door … but I have paused to set an intention, tapping into lessons from a friend:

instead of holding up a shield to life or pulling life in and 'processing' it, I will take life in like air, I will be porous and completely penetrable, like a window screen, letting life pass in, pass out, no residue, no burden to carry.

Thanks for appreciating how much HUGER this painting is than my usual. Don't know when I'll next add to it, since I've started a live on-line painting class that certainly claimed considerable time on day one yesterday and will run for 10 weeks.

I love this as is. For what it's worth.
Hope you're feeling better by now.

Corinne, thanks for your vote of confidence. This canvas is the largest I've ever painted on, and I see it as somewhat of a blackboard, a place to play and "erase" and play again. You may already have discovered in my subsequent post, that I went on to change the painting the next day. It hasn't changed since, but it will.

Thanks for your wishes for my feeling better. I'm more centered again, less betwixt and between—although next week is another transition week (aren't they all?!).
