Poetry

I bumped into a little unintended poem in a line of nonfiction text last night:

The discipline
of creation
is a mix
of surrender
and initiative.

Yes, yes, yes!

Thank you, Shaun McNiff.

I've taken the initiative to surrender to what an exploration of sketching might illuminate for me. I'm finding lyrical visual language.

Today's sketches derive from scenes photographed at The Ovens in Feltzen South, Nova Scotia. I liked sinking fully into shape and line. I liked the act of sketching just for itself. I may use these sketches as reference points for later work, but these are not sketches on a canvas which I will now go on to flesh out. They are just themselves. Little sketches. Refreshing little drinks of cool, clear water on a hot summer day.

Thanks for checking them out, Sheila. We've had a house blessedly full of family for several days now, and my posts are ones I prepped in advance, but I look forward to getting back to my art and to this new exploration.

I can see that second one as a very cool cliff: violets, purples, blues!

Hi Laurie, happy 4th! Thanks for your color thoughts for a very cool cliff. I'm having fun wondering where these sketches might take me.

I love this little poem and I am sticking it in my working place!

Isn't it terrific? It speaks to exactly what pulls me into painting again and again—that intersection of surrender and initiative, intuition and skill, spontaneous and deliberate. Such an exquisite tension.

In the second one I see the rock jetty at Kelsey Point. Keep Barby away!

Oh my gosh—love the Old Kelsey Point association! LOL at your admonishment to keep Barby away!
