Direct Instruction

I attended a short art class last Saturday under the direction of my 6-year-old granddaughter, Emmy.

Emmy: Gma, do you know how to draw a butterfly?

Gma: Show me how, Emmy!

And she did.

Emmy: See? That's how to draw a butterfly! You do it now!

And I did.

Emmy is generous with support, praise, and gold stars!

I've enjoyed dabbling in b&w recently. Give it a whirl.

Emmy is a terrific teacher. And she creates art as fearlessly as Jane Davies—I love watching her create with both purpose and unselfconscious confidence. I often envision her as an angel on my shoulder when I paint.
