My New Best Friend

Happy birthday, Martha!

Martha was my new best friend in September, 1967, at the American School in London. Martha is now my … best friend of quite awhile!

Once a year she condescends to be the same age as I, instead of younger, for about fourteen weeks.

Those fourteen weeks begin now, Martha.

For her birthday card this year I took a section of the blind contour drawing I did in January and used it as the foundation for an abstract painting: blind contour drawing with pen first, india ink brush-like pens next, pastels after that, and finally tissue paper collage.

I'm hoping Martha might tuck this little paper prayer into a book, thereby taking me with her, in a manner of speaking, when she travels to Vietnam and Cambodia in a few days.

So lovely, to match your lovely story. Happy Sunday Dotty!

Thanks, Sheila. The blues and greens make a sweet counterpoint to the grayscale world of a winter day with snowfall! A happy Sunday to you, too.

How lovely to have my birthday featured on your blog. Thank you for paper prayer 31 which will definitely accompany me to Vietnam. You are a gem and I treasure our now almost 49-year-long friendship. xo M

Martha! Hope you had a grand bday! Woo hoo—I'm going to Vietnam! Laughing at your confessing to the # of years of our friendship after my delicately sidestepping it in my post : )

I love this one, Dotty. The tissue paper makes a "smokey", mysterious looks. Very cool!

Thanks, Laurie. Exploring use of tissue paper has been fun. In many cases, depending on what color on what color, it isn't even visible when wet. Then it creates an effect when dry.
