January Birthdays

Who has more fun than I do?

No one!

Caroline and Emmy's birthdays are four days apart in January, and usually Papawi and I travel 600 miles to Virginia to celebrate with the girls in person a few days early over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Not this year; we'll celebrate with them a few weeks late in February.

So, I set an intention awhile back to paint and send cards to tide the girls over until we get to Virginia in person to give hugs and kisses and gifts.

In the interim I got into fooling around with my cut-ups explorations.

You can see where this is going.

My cut-ups have turned into over-sized flat birthday cards just right for framing and hanging in girls' bedrooms.

So. Much. F-U-N!

For six years, Caroline and Emmy shared a bedroom, starting when Emmy was born. However, as of two weeks ago, they now have side by side rooms in their new home. In making my cards for the girls, I took a quadrant from each cut-up and transposed it to its "sister" cut-up. Caroline will have a bit of Emmy's red, and Emmy will have a bit of Caroline's blue so they can each have a little toehold in the other's bedroom.

Happy birthday, granddaughters of mine!

This project was total F-U-N from start to finish! Glad you like it, too. I'm hoping mail is getting delivered at the girls' house today, what with snow on the roads.

SO cool, Dotty! Lucky grandchildren. F-U-N.......isn't it the greatest! My Dad used to say, "This is not a dress rehearsal". A big reason to have fun as often as possible.

Thanks, Laurie. And thanks to your dad, too, for his spot-on understanding/reminder that this is not a dress rehearsal. Here's to F-U-N F-O-R-E-V-E-R!

Thanks, Simone! If you didn't already, go back through the past three posts to see the development of these birthday cards. These came as a direct result of your introducing me to Jane Davies' teeny tiny art through your own experimentation with the concept : ) Thanks!

Yes I recognized them! It is fun that the same principle takes on so much different forms!
For me it is a formula that invites a lot of playfulness and fun, and it is not so time-consuming, so you can simply make something when you hardly have time.

Bye!

Yes, so many different forms! I'm eager to make others and see where they take me.

These did invite playfulness and fun, and they came together quickly for me. I will come back to this principle, for exactly those reasons.

I'm intrigued how different projects, which would seem at the outset to be similarly simple and playful, can require such different energy from me. All part of the mystery and stimulus of making art!
