Another One Cut Loose

I do love me my paper trimmer. The weight of the arm. The precise grid lines on the base. The sound when arm meets base in an irrevocable slice.

Today I did another cut-up exercise, this time with my second set of colors:

Loose background of blues—phthalo, cobalt, and cerulean.
Neutral collage papers.
Raw umber and white to tone it all down.
Blots.
Wipes.
Doodles.
Pastels.

All so I could take my creativity and concentration and intuition and decision making and flow and risk and daring and invention … and run 'em through a guillotine!

work in progress

Again, waiting to see where this will go.

Steps along the way:

collaged
muddied
doodled
chopped, rearranged, idling

Oh Dotty I love LOVE LOVE this! I love the doodled pre-cutting too! I love the way the four work together. Bits of wall and sky, and wildflowers springing up here and there. You doddle do so well! (BTW, did I mention I love this :)

Sheila, thanks for joining me in loving this piece! It took a definite measure of boldness and courage to head to my paper trimmer, but what fun awaited me when I did. I share your sense of story here—bits of wall and sky, and wildflowers springing up here and there. Tomorrow, the final reveal!

Joan, thanks for your affirming comments. This piece was really fun to work on, and fascinating in its progression, with the collaged stage so stark, the muddied stage so dull, and then—pop!—the magic started coming together.

Laurie, such fun to have this piece be such a joy for me and then speak so joyfully to others, especially others like you whose art speaks so strongly to me. Hope you're enjoying my allusions to the title of your posted painting today—didn't realize till after the words were out of my mouth that I was doing so!

Wow! I'm glad you shared your process...is fun to see the transformation the piece is undergoing. Aren't paper cutters the BEST?!!Something so satisfying in pulling that chopper arm down and in the process, creating a whole new piece of art with a different feel. I LOVE this one!

Corinna, thanks for your comments and feedback … and your shared love of paper cutters! I've had a paper cutter for years. Cannot imagine a home without one. I've taken it to True Value many times for sharpening.

Thanks for your appreciation in seeing the process and thanks for your enthusiasm for the evolution of this particular piece!
