Casting About

Feeling a little unsettled in my painting the past 5-6 days, casting my line, catching this and that.

Today, reeled in a slice of early September wetlands here in coastal Massachusetts.

Gessobord, a #12 bright, a photo reference. Quick sketch of the sausage shapes first, then on to paint. Alternated between occasional glances at my photo and letting the emerging painting itself direct my hand and brush.

The photography end of things is a challenge. So much to learn about how to get good photos from which to paint and so much to learn about how to photograph completed paintings.

I like the light happy feel of this painting, the energy it gives off.

Laurie, thanks for your comments. As you no doubt know as a painter yourself, process and product can be two different things, with process great, product not so much, or vice versa. This painting had me sighing and struggling in the process, and then I was surprised to feel the happiness of a bright sunny September morning when I stood back. I'm delighted that you felt the life, energy, and movement of the saltwater marsh flora here!

Sheila, so much fun that you also felt the movement and light in this painting—yay! I've always thought of these plants at cattails but I went online to check and to see if they might have a scientfic name that appealed to me. What I discovered was a nickname I'd never heard before—instant title!
